I know Martinez bears the brunt for calling up Ronaldo but as for me and my mud hut, it shows that Portugal have a deeply unserious federation. Like The Brazilian one. Neymar shouldn’t have been in the squad.

Presented at the 3rd Namibia Media and Communication Conference where I spoke about journalists as social thinkers and what it means to rethink the role of the journalist at a moment when the industry itself is being redefined. Very cool to see local media pick up the presentation afterwards.

The night before I met Nasser, I was nostalgic for the self who wrote about personal experiences and existential questions on a defunct blog. I wondered whether withholding her was defensible or merely an excuse. In this profound essay, Nasser narrates that self back to life.

from which liberal legalism derives political legitimacy. But you cannot establish the illegitimacy of a jihadist by saying that he violates a constitution whose authority he fundamentally rejects. That only restates the legitimacy of the order under contestation.

Steff Ndei @steffndei.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
There is a mismatch in the liberal-legalist conception of legitimacy: protest, exposure and moral condemnation are treated as legitimate forms of resistance, while coups, militias and insurgencies are illegitimate because they reject the constitutional and international order

It might be time to re-consider the rule which enables clubs to claim 100% profit on sales of home-grown players. It only seems to encourage said clubs to sell the footballers who are the purest and most relatable expressions of their identity.

They lost before Kenya’s Sports Disputes Tribunal and the case has moved to the High Court. Here comes my "feature not a bug" beat: Court proceedings have delayed or suspended domestic leagues in Ghana (2015/16, 2018 and 2022), Uganda (2014), Sierra Leone (2023) and Nigeria (2016).

FKF introduced new regulations abolishing that playoff and providing for the bottom three clubs to be relegated automatically. Sharks argue that the amended regulations were not properly authorised and could not legitimately determine their fate.

Steff Ndei @steffndei.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Under the previous rules, the bottom two clubs were automatically relegated. The total number of clubs in the Kenyan top flight is 18. The club finishing 16th would play a playoff against a second-division team for the remaining top-flight place. Kariobangi Sharks finished 16th.

Kariobangi Sharks, the club suing the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is owned by Nick Mwendwa. Nick was Football Kenya Federation president from 2016 to 2024. He vied and lost as vice president against the regime he is suing. So why is Kariobangi Sharks suing?

Not exactly a #DailyAffirmation, but was surprising to hear @fdsignifier.bsky.social say it in an older video about Amber Heard when it felt relevant to me. Have a good one, y’all.
“I’ve been chronically online for 3 years now, as a part of this as a career. And I’ve had more than a few hate campaigns towards me, and one thing I’ve learned from this is that people can effectively just make up shit or at best take something with the tiniest sliver of truth and just repeat it telephone style in comment sections and reddit boards until it becomes basically factual lore and blown out of proportion. Because when you make shit up online, you don’t have to look people in the eye to do it. And when people don’t like you, or looking for a reason not to like you, the burden of truth and factuality on whatever bad thing they hear about you is very, very low.”

It grinds my gears that the concepts ”woke” and “left“ have been weaponized against people who are not anywhere near woke nor left. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Steff Ndei @steffndei.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
I don’t know why “right wing” is considered a slur or derogatory. The right seem to diagnose societal and systemic issues aptly. Their prescriptions however, are worse than the diagnosis. As for the ”left” their diagnoses are so off…! Hence why I don’t understand why they think they’re any better.

The reactions I receive whenever I divulge what I’m up to during the summer is also quite telling. Not sure if it’s confessions of what people think of cleaners or cleaning as a job. I’m actually having fun at this job as it’s honest work and doesn‘t make it to the list of existing bullshit jobs.

Of all my qualifications, the one currently proving most economically useful is an old colonial technology of discipline effected in the Kenyan education system . Maybe this is what they mean when they say colonialism worked!

Apparently I was such a good cleaner last summer that I’ve now been promoted to team leader, which, it turns out, involves doing almost exactly what I did as a prefect in a Kenyan boarding school.

Steff Ndei @steffndei.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
I work as a cleaner during the summer to because I’m trying to stay ahead of the AI-is-going-to-take-our-jobs curve, because academia is unsustainable and/or because I’m buying independence from the systems and industries I criticise. The official explanation depends on one‘s school of thought.

take off your idealogical hats and put on the systemic lens. Whatever happens in sports discourse is that people treat the dysfunction as a “curse“ when literally there is a scientific explanation for why it happens.
010
Steff Ndei @steffndei.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
Precisely because there is so much evidence of dysfunction such as foreign born footballers in national teams, dead leagues, match fixing etc etc.

FIFA helps construct the terms under which it is evaluated, obtains external institutional recognition within those terms, and then presents that recognition as independent validation of the whole arrangement. the entire structure producing legitimacy needs to be questioned.
