omfg shut up. the whole point of having invented sandboxes and airgapped testing environments roughly forever ago was that yes it was assumed and known that a program can just go and be a virus elsewhere if you let it why do you think they are called viruses

The problem is that until VERY recently, it was not accepted that it was possible for a bunch of machines to escape virtual captivity, illicitly communicate, collectively strategize, and hack real-world systems.
