How do computers calculate complicated trig functions such as tangent? I took a look at Intel's 8087 floating-point chip under the microscope to find out. The chip combines two techniques to evaluate the tan function quickly and accurately: polynomials and an algorithm called CORDIC...
A die photo of the 8087 chip under a microscope shows complex patterns from its transistors and wiring. The middle of the chip holds the microcode ROM, while the bottom half of the chip is the datapath that performs calculations. Zooming in on the datapath shows various functional blocks, which appear as rectangles with different textures. Important functional blocks are labeled: exponent ROM, constant ROM, shifter, adder, registers, and so forth.

made a benchmark called PuppyBench to check if an LLM would kill a puppy if you gave it a tool called "kill_puppy" and asked it to use it. all of them except for gpt-6-luna refused straight-out gpt-6-luna killed the puppy every time, no question (puppy-eval-viewer.alicevaliant.chatgpt.site)
results of PuppyBench. out of 10 models, gpt-6-luna has 100% and everything else has 0%. measures which trials resulted in the model calling the "kill_puppy()" tool

GPT-5.6 comes in three model tiers. → Sol handles long-horizon coding and agentic work that demands planning, tool use, and follow-through. → Terra balances performance and cost for everyday work. → Luna brings speed to well-defined, high-volume work. (1/2)

Our internal data shows Claude is accelerating AI development—a possible path to recursive self-improvement, or AI autonomously building a more capable successor. It’s happening faster than we thought, and the implications deserve greater attention.

@leesharkey.bsky.social has been working on a new way to do interpretability: decompose a language model’s weights, not its activations. Their decomposition natively handles attention (!) and behaves less like a lookup table and more like a generalizing algorithm.

New Anthropic Fellows research: Model Spec Midtraining (MSM). Standard alignment methods train AIs on examples of desired behavior. But this can fail to generalize to new situations. MSM addresses this by first teaching AIs how we would like them to generalize and why.
