it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

The impossibility of automating ambiguity (Birhane 2021)

Human creativity is marked by imagination and thinking of things that were not thought of before. Creative innovations that have come to define and revolutionize the world, from music to medicine, are often marked by surprise, spontaneity, and uncertainty. Creativity, Juarrero (2000) reminds us, stands in stark opposition to certainty and predictability. It requires unexpected and spontaneous behaviour and not repeating past patterns and trajectories. Creativity, by definition, defies expectation.4
As ML systems attempt to order the spontaneous and non-determinable social world, they create a future that resembles the past leaving us no room for a chance to be different. Such classifications and predictions reinforce stereotypes and impinge on the inherently open-endedness of being, limiting a personʼs potential by defining them by what people like them have done or liked or how people like them have behaved in the past. When future behaviours are predicted based on past stereotypes, individuals are deprived of the opportunity to challenge stereotypes and to realize their full potential.

I made a Doom source port that runs within a PDF file. PDFs support Javascript, so Emscripten is used to compile Doom to asm.js, which is then run within the PDF engine. Input/output is done by manipulating text input fields. doompdf.pages.dev/doom.pdf github.com/ading2210/do...

every industry person knows how hard the business side of publishing is. how much is out of your control. money, publicity, sales... you gotta find a memory, a feeling, that keeps you going. i gave my whole heart to making stories with you. i am the idiot who decided that love was worth trying to make a career, a life off of. because you inspired me so much. and those memories are still my north star.

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that

Making comparisons between complex things can be a helpful tool for understanding them - I think that people sometimes mistake having a useful surface-level analogy for having a deep understanding of how complex systems work.

The unspoken assumption behind AI use cases like this is that other people aren't actually Real in the way the AI enthusiast is - so it's fine to waste their time with a chatbot. Other people can buy the deadly AI-generated mushroom-hunting book because the only thing real about them is their money.
