Soft Machinery

Drowned lilies in a basin behind chapel doors.
The feeling of a snail crawling down the throat.

Of history, is it the metaphor or the body that dies?
The float of seasons, a widening orbit, the book older and stranger.

Standard are the ways we hurt each other, however slowly it may make us.

Ignited

Vague paradise I have no right to sell,
this host of petty flaws you couldn't love.
Incompetence, but arrogance as well;
afraid if punches thrown, push comes to shove.
There also hides another tale to tell,
a story viewed more kindly from above.

It isn’t plump of flesh, comes from a book
which isn't finished yet, might never be
(hypothesis regarding final look
assembles dimly, indiscernibly),
still struggles under fence, then over brook
ignited by mere thought of you and me.

It's undeniably more difficult to successfully promote new books today as algorithms/A.I. make successful promotion a constant moving target. The writing community has been significantly diminished as so many supportive writers move around to other sites and spend less time online because of chaotic world events flooding timelines/feeds, as well as the relentless scams, cons, bots, fake author accounts and phony promoters wasting our time.
It's SO important for the writing community to come together and support fellow authors by reading & reviewing their books, and/or reposting their publication announcements.
The writing community is stronger when we stand together!

Only Alchemies

Rum signpost, cryptic writing, ancient bard,
kaleidoscope, ascent of northern star,
decipherments of whispers on the breeze;
no conjurations, only alchemies.

These snowglobe flake suggestions, surface skims,
unravellings of slinkies snagged within,
peripheral to navigation’s aid;
however long my road, the mood is gay.

Beneath old ferns, abandoned garden shears
accumulating quaintly through the years,
your petulant narrator’s vacant stare,
romantic railway bridge in disrepair,
one fundamental pattern reappears.
The story’s hidden twist was always there.

Cover of the short story flash fiction collect POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE by Nick Black"This is such a brilliant collection. Nick Black's prose is shining, muscular and glittering with unforgettable images. Each piece takes the reader into the depths of humour, tragedy or menace with skilful sparsity of words and mastery of language. A bold new voice, and a must-have for your bookshelves.' - Catherine Menon, author of FRAGILE MONSTERS

'Dystopian, anarchic, witty, subversive - a Nick Black story is instantly recognisable and never to be forgotten. This collection of his flash fiction zings with energy and knife-sharp voices that both disturb and disarm, but there is also a haunting gentleness that will linger with you long after you put the book down. POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE is a tour de force of everything flash fiction can be." - Fiona Mackintosh, author of THE YET UNKNOWING WORLD

This week's Sunday Snippet is a rich slice of Aristotle’s Menu by Sreelekha Chatterjee @sreelekha2024.bsky.social We loved the irony of the piece, its vivid & immersive imagery, & the unexpected ending. Read it in Issue 6. ~ Responses are still being sent out, thank you for your patience.
SUNDAY SNIPPETS
The man makes him sit. A whiff of tree trunk and untamed mushrooms hovers. He removes his shoes. Neil’s feet touch the soft, squelchy earth. His body quakes, then calms. A gentle swishing sound rejuvenates. Rustling of leaves. The musty aroma of worms. Droplets fall on his hands and face like pinpricks. A drizzle. The sound of striking matchsticks on a matchbox makes him shivery. A cool breeze brings along a touch of warmth as if something is on fire.
