Beautiful and enigmatic poem by Rilke ..
Before Summer Rain

Suddenly, from all the green around you,
something-you don't know what-has disappeared;
you feel it creeping closer to the window,
in total silence. From the nearby wood

you hear the urgent whistling of a plover,
reminding you of someone's Saint Jerome:
so much solitude and passion come
from that one voice, whose fierce request the downpour

will grant. The walls, with their ancient portraits, glide
away from us, cautiously, as though
they weren't supposed to hear what we are saying.

And reflected on the faded tapestries now;
the chill, uncertain sunlight of those long
childhood hours when you were so afraid.

Again and again the leaves / enact their beauty Marianne Boruch
Over the Twilight Street

Fall. And the boys are cold, without jackets the football their milkweed pod
bursting over the twilight street. They jump and release themselves, crying
like birds. Hours from the morning fog
the air is chilled good water
taken from a stream
with a cupped hand. They can barely keep themselves inside their bodies, vivid as light
through leaves, though now the leaves
have their own lifetime to consider
pressing back
into trance: a red brilliance
which listens for no one, an iridescence too complete to translate. I bike by them the football spinning above me,
a blurred planet. Boys who will be men, boys who will be taken by surprise by failure. Again and again the leaves enact their beauty.

Image of the book cover for "Duanaire - collected waterfords" - edited by Kevin MacAlan and published by West Waterford Press. Black text on a mid-blue background. The front cover image (colour photograph by Kevin MacAlan) is a view looking out towards the sea across sand, with the coast on the horizon in the distance.

Text on the back covers reads: In your hands is a collection of over 300 waterfords penned by more than 90 poets from all around the world. The waterford, now frequently called "the Irish haiku" has become a global sensation. It is a positive poem of 4 lines, 8-4-4-8 syllables, the fourth line rhyming with the first, and the third line rhyming with the second. Deceptively simple. The waterford's versatility is one of its great attractions, not only to read, but also to write. Only 24 syllables, and 800 years younger then both the limerick and the haiku, the waterford is already finding its place.

Waterford Rhyme

The waterford is hard to write,
you have to count
the right amount
of syllables and lines; it's tight.

"Move over limerick, the waterford is here!" Waterford News and Star
"It really does roll off the tongue easier than a limerick." Kyle Butler, WLR FM
"Unlike the mean limerick, the waterford is all about being nice!" Dungarvan Leader
