Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! Today would've been the sixty-fifth birthday of Yu-Gi-Oh! creator Kazuki Takahashi. It tends to get swallowed up in the enormous franchise it became, but I truly believe that his original manga can provide a valuable lesson to artists about process and work and improvement over time.

Takahashi was thirty-five when Yu-Gi-Oh! began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump, a far cry from the stories of younger prodigies that made that leap in their early twenties. His life beforehand had been marked by poverty - his art was rejected numerous times.

The early Yu-Gi-Oh! manga has received a thousand "Whoa, you didn't KNOW how DARK early Yu-Gi-Oh! was!" articles, but more important than that is the fact that Takahashi is still not perfect. His paneling is a little haphazard, his character designs are constantly off model...

But there's more to it than that. A manga author's life is a grinding one. The schedule is punishing, the expectations are immense, and the industry is hyper-competitive. It's easy to say a creators "fell off," but it's usually that they're crushed.
