Given the discourse, you'd never know that 99% of single-stair apartments are built in the suburbs.

Fundamentally, I like the idea of this. Federal government services are dreadfully confusing and difficult to access. AI could be part of the solution. But I have serious questions about how the data and queries are used, how privacy is protected, and how hallucinations are handled. america.gov

So-called “inclusionary zoning,” the practice of requiring home builders to rent new apartments at a loss to low-income tenants, is a tax on new housing that worsens the housing shortage and raises rents overall in exchange for a handful of means-tested units. It’s bad policy!

If I were Xavier Becerra, I’d focus my first two years on expanding the best public university system in the world by adding five new UC campuses and ten new CSU campuses. And I’d expand existing aid to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for all students.

This is a poor-quality Class C office building that needs a full gut to be marketable, which would be exorbitantly expensive. The discounted valuation reflects that. The buyers were only interested in it for the lot value.

It really feels like the housing crisis has built up an entire world of consultancy and political agencies to endlessly discuss the topic rather than fixing it. There’s a whole financial and political economy around the topic now

It doesn’t have to be “one seat ride everywhere,” but it should be “one seat to the most popular destinations” and the restructure made that worse. My daily commute is ~10-15 minutes longer today than earlier in the summer, largely because of the North and East Connections restructures.

The likelihood of anything like this happening is vanishingly slim in the short-term and still quite slim in the long-term. The state needs to step in to ensure agencies like Sound Transit don’t throw away money at cost-ineffective services—or force City action to make those services pencil.

Literally the only way this station makes sense is if Seattle: 🏗️ Upzones to allow at least 250’ in height within a half-mile of the station, on both sides of I-5 ⛳️ Sells at least a portion of the golf course to enable redevelopment 🚲 Provides gold-standard east-west connectivity to nearby areas

“We spent $240 million on a station in the middle of nowhere because we didn’t want to stand up to a single City Councilmember” is a truly perfect way to run a transit agency. Chef’s kiss!

Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 27/09/2026
Forced transfers often make transit service worse, not better, since they eliminate one-seat rides. KCM should be prioritizing organic transfers—buses and rail serve different purposes.

Don’t say, “if a human did this, they’d be indicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.” A human DID do this! A human wrote the software! A human trained the software! A human tested the software! Those humans should be indicted!

The AI doesn’t have agency, the humans do. OpenAI engineers created a software system that illegally hacked government databases and software systems. They should be prosecuted and face civil liability to the fullest extent of the law.

I’m not sure I agree. It’s not good economically to have companies jumping between Seattle and Bellevue for tax reasons, for example. Maybe at the county level. But the central Puget Sound is one functional economic area. It’s inefficient to have so many different rules and taxes within it.

It’s great for Seattle when it can solve problems for itself. It’s even greater for Seattle—and great for the state—when Seattle can help solve problems for the entire state.

So many problems, in so many states, are downstream of our unwillingness to tax real estate at its market value, and more generally of our unwillingness to acknowledge that housing wealth is, in fact, wealth.

Fortunate that this is a legislative election year, then! That’s a great place for people to do advocacy on tax reform issues!

Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 26/09/2026
From an economic perspective, Seattle and Bellevue are in the same labor, housing, services, and goods market. They should thus be in more or less the same tax market. The state needs to set a clear floor and allow less variation across cities, especially within regions. It’s bad for the state!

This is a SYSTEMIC problem, not a one-off problem that can be fixed by simply adding more revenue sources. No! The entire design of the state and local tax system in this state is bad! It’s a forced annual budget cut, and “fixing it” for Just Seattle actually makes the problem WORSE, not better.

Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 26/09/2026
Seattle constantly adding new revenue––when the *entire state* needs an overhaul, especially to property tax––is bad for Seattle. It makes the city and arguably the state less economically competitive. Just abolish the 1% cap on levy increases and new local revenue isn’t necessary.

Nithya Raman (like Zohran Mamdani) is "progressive" in the 19th Century sense of the word: A sweeping structural reformer looking to unbreak broken administrative systems and make dysfunctional local government work again. Turns out, there's a strong a cross-ideological constituency for that.

Are you saying, for example, “cut SPD staffing if their case solve rates go down” or “if property crime goes up” (suggesting they “aren’t doing their jobs”)? Because either of those would go over like a ton of bricks and y’all refuse to engage with that fact.
100
Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 26/09/2026
It’s not clear to me what that means in practice, though. Especially when the mayor is bound by an SPOG contract that determines performance standards and in some cases staffing levels.

Why doesn’t anyone anthropomorphize the engineers who are creating the AI models? For example: “OpenAI engineers wrote a software program that illegally penetrated the protected systems of Hugging Face, a third-party company. It is unclear whether the company or the engineers will be held liable.”

I really don’t think it can even be credibly described as a “cuts budget” (it’s literally half a percent!), and budgets are absolutely not a narrow dichotomy like that.
230
Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 24/09/2026
Not in a $9.1 billion annual budget, and especially when compared to prior projections, previous years’ budgets, or the impact on staffing, which is very small.

Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 24/09/2026
It’s almost a sort of remixed version of the Proximity Law of Seattle Politics. Praise socialist governance elsewhere, but ignore the tradeoffs said governance is making on public safety. Criticize socialist governance locally when it makes literally the exact same tradeoffs.

Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 24/09/2026
This is an absolutely absurd take, not least because it could hardly be described as “austerity” for the other departments. I’ve yet to see advocates engage with HOW defund happens in practice without unintended consequences. I agree with the end goal! Also, have y’all SEEN Mamdani’s NYPD budget?

Waymo does not use teleoperators, but they do occasionally have remote assistants when they get stuck. As toward eliminating Uber/Lyft drivers, that would be a good thing. They are not as safe as Waymo, and this type of “job” loss (though it’s not a W-2 job) usually results in new jobs elsewhere.
110
Spokane Rising @spokanerising.com · 24/09/2026
It is time for #waleg to finally legalize Waymo in our state, to improve safety and reduce crashes. We can do it the right way, w/: ✅ Regulation as a utility by UTC ✅ Tax on miles traveled ✅ Data transparency ❌ No entry for unproven tech (i.e. Tesla) Inaction this session would be indefensible.

I think it really depends on the context, ironically it’s far more important to avoid with models whose objective is to appear more human. If I say a coding agent “does” something, yeah adding a whole “it can’t actually…” is sort of tediously obfuscatory.
