What do you get when you mix climate change, logistics, and fossil fuels, and a war? A Bluesky thread on the convergence between summer drought in Europe, a dam in the Netherlands, Germany's reliance on a single river, and why the US still has to care about climate change. Settle in. (1/11)

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
Spaghetti chart showing Oxford Radcliffe Observatory daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1815 to 2026. 211 years of historical data are shown as very faint grey lines tracing a seasonal cycle from around 5°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, running from January through to late May before spiking sharply upward to reach 33.7°C on 26 May, well above the entire historical grey envelope for that time of year. A single dashed red reference line marks the previous May record of 30.6°C set on 29 May 1944. The 2026 reading exceeds this by 3.1°C and, in statistical terms, is the 6th most anomalous maximum temperature in Oxford's 211-year record, ranking as the most anomalous May maximum ever observed and coming within 0.6°C of the all-time June record of 34.3°C set in 1976.

If you own an Echo device and work from home, place it outside the room where you have business calls. Starting March 28th, your voice recordings will be sent to Amazon's remote servers for processing. #Privacy
Dear Echo Customer,

We are reaching out to let you know that the Alexa
feature 'Do Not Send Voice Recordings’ that you
enabled on your supported Echo device(s) will no
longer be available beginning March 28th, 2025,
This feature allowed compatible Echo devices to
process the audio of Alexa requests locally on
device. As we continue to expand Alexa's
capabilities with generative Al features that rely on
the processing power of Amazon's secure cloud, we
have decided to no longer support this feature.

If you do not take action, your Alexa Settings will
automatically be updated to ‘Don’t save
recordings.’ This means that, starting on Marc!
28th, your voice recordings will be sent to and
processed in the cloud, and they will be deleted
after Alexa processes your requests. Any previously
saved voice recordings will also be deleted. If your
voice recordings setting is updated to ‘Don’t save
recordings,’ voice ID will not work and you will not
be able to create a voice ID for individual users to
access more personalized features. If you do not
want to set your voice recordings setting to ‘Don't
save recordings,’ please follow these steps before
March 28th:
