Edinburgh tech firm launches repairable sports watch
A tech firm based in Edinburgh has launched a new GPS sports watch specifically designed to be repaired and modified by its owners. UNA Watch aims to challenge industry giants such as Apple and Garmin by offering an alternative to sealed hardware and regular replacement cycles. Backed by Techstart Ventures and SFC Capital, the company provides an open software platform that allows users to programme their own applications. The device is assembled using replaceable components, meaning owners can change parts including the battery and display instead of discarding the entire watch.

Chop Suey on Chambers Street: the thread about Edinburgh’s first Chinese restaurant 中式餐廳
Edinburgh is spoiled for restaurants serving global cuisine. Go back 100 years however and your options were far more limited and localised. That all changed with the arrival of the "Chinese Restaurant" in 1930. It is long gone and accounts of it are contradictory and vague. This thread provides a factual account of this lesser-known institution of the city's diaspora.

Banging this drum again, but here's a visualisation of how poor reporting on the Holyrood election was. By 3pm on count day, constituency vote had settled into "correct" order for parties, but there were no regional results until about 7.30pm. Only 2 regions done by final constituency result at 9pm!
A chart showing the constituency vote % by time of day. This begins at 1pm with the SNP in a clear first with the Lib Dems second, reflecting that the first declaration had been from Orkney. Labour are initially third, Reform fourth, the Conservatives fifth, and Greens sixth.

Early declarations lead to significant changes, such that by 3pm the chart has settled into the correct order of parties: SNP first, Labour second, Reform third, Conservatives fourth, Lib Dems fifth, Greens sixth.A chart showing the regional vote % by time of day, based on actual whole-region declarations. This shows no data until 7.30pm, at which point the SNP and Greens are a very close first and second, Labour third, Lib Dems fourth, Reform fifth, and Conservatives sixth. This reflects the fact that the first region to declare was Edinburgh and Lothians East. Only one additional region declared before 9pm, which substantially widened the SNP's vote lead and saw Reform narrowly overtake the Lib Dems, but the order of parties otherwise unchanged.

A note on the chart reads: Regional list vote results were only fully and publicly declared, and logged by broadcasters and the media, when the whole region was complete. This meant that there was no easily accessible information about the progress of the regional count for most of the day, except on Ballot Box Scotland (and that was only part-reporting due to deficiencies in data publication by authorities)

Relevant to this: in 2024, a majority (51%) of those polled in Scotland by Survation for BBS backed party funding approaches that involved a cap on private donations, with 60% overall backing a system of proper public funding for parties.
Party Funding
Finally and similar to the last question, I wanted to ask about the thorny issue of funding for political parties, the subject of my first briefing (again, these need refreshed!). On this front, the poll asked: “Political parties in the UK are currently largely funded by private donations, including from wealthy donors. Some other countries provide public funding for political parties based on how many votes they receive at elections, and limit the value of donations individuals can make. Which of the following statements is closest to your view? ” The options for this question were that political parties should:

… receive some public funding based on the votes they receive, and large donations should be capped
… be entirely funded based on the votes they receive
… be wholly funded by private donations
… receive some public funding based on the votes they receive, but large donations should not be capped

Public Funding, cap donations: 32%
Public funding only: 19%
Private donations only: 18%
Public funding, no cap on donations: 9%
Don't Know: 22%
