We have a coat-cupboard thing under the stairs and we call it "The Beef Cupboard" because the cat always wants to go in it, as if she expects it to be full of tasty beef. She sits at the door, meowing until you open it. Then she goes in and checks under the coats to make sure there's no beef today

I'm just hearing that the Israelis, not content with committing genocide in Gaza, are now "crossing a red line" and risking "making a Palestinian state unviable"
Screenie of snippet from BBC:

Last week, Ed Miliband said he would unveil a "comprehensive reset" of the British government's policy on Israel.

In his first speech to Parliament as foreign secretary, he said plans from Israel to build some 1,200 settlement homes in the so-called E1 area - east of Jerusalem - were "illegal under international law".

Miliband called the plans "the crossing of a red line, as it cuts through the heart of the West Bank and risks making a Palestinian state unviable".

The foreign secretary said last month the Israeli Chargé d'Affaires had been summoned to the Foreign Office, where he had "set out the UK's profound objection to this move by the Netanyahu government and demanded an immediate reversal".

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar responded by saying it was "absurd for Britain to lecture the Jewish people about where they may live in their historic tiny homeland".

He said: "The UK government's decision to damage the relationship between our countries is deeply unfortunate."

This one is by the MP whose big issue is that special forces shouldn’t be investigated for the war crimes everyone appears to have known about for years. No, not that MP, the other one. Not the Tory ones, the Labour one. No, the other one.

While you campaigned for LGBTQ+ rights, I studied Fred Dibnah. While you were challenging racist attitudes towards immigrants, I was drinking pints with a big fookin' head on them. And now the word is burning and fascists are rioting in the streets you have the audacity to come to me for help?

The right is paranoid about Islamic/Bolshevik conspiracies to destroy freedom and subjugate the white race. The left is worried about getting fucked over in heavily choreographed political/media outrages orchestrated offscreen by Peter Mandelson’s friends. One of these things is a crazed fantasy.

Rafael Behr's post, re: the neo-nazi guy Badenoch is wanging on about:

"The opposite position would be more rational. If she really thinks this guy's credentials are as exemplar of rehabilitation and can teach anti-extremism she should want him to have biggest platform. "It's ok because he'd only be on potholes and bins" suggests less confidence in his conversion."

my reply:

"the fact his website at the time was explicitly neo-nazi, devoted to attacking the left, non-whites, immigrants etc does rather suggests that his recent repainting of it as "i fell in with the left and became antisemitic but i'm over it" is a lie, yes. you credulous chump tinyurl.com/59pkahh9"

It is staggeringly reprehensible and reckless to continue this insulting bullshit at a time when the global far right have advanced so far that *the leader of the Conservative Party* is defending recruitment of a convicted neo-Nazi, on the grounds he is an expert on antiracism and anti-extremism.

Modified a Dorian Lynskey post, about Rod Liddle, which used to say:

"I think this confuses the private person, who can be mourned by friends, family and colleagues, and the public figure, whose legacy can be assessed based on his work. These are two different things and they have to coexist"

and my version says

"I think this confuses the private cunt, who can be mourned by ppl who were fine with that, and the public cunt, whose legacy can be assessed based on his work. These are literally the same cunt"

My beef with Morrissey runs all the way back to 1986 when he said this about Black artists. Nineteen Eighty Six, while the Smiths were still active. It’s not a “later phenomenon” don’t try and lie to me www.standard.co.uk/culture/musi...
1986 — "Reggae, for example, is to me the most racist music in the entire world. It's an absolute total glorification of black supremacy... I don't have very cast iron opinions on black music other than black modern music which I detest. I detest Stevie Wonder. I think Diana Ross is awful. I hate all those records in the Top 40 - Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston. I think they're vile in the extreme... Obviously to get on Top Of The Pops these days, one has to be, by law, black," he told Melody Maker.

One time I thought “maybe I would enjoy cryptic crosswords” and then I tried a clue and couldn’t solve it and I looked up the explanation and it said I was supposed to replace the word “sailor” with the letters “as”, for “Able Seaman”. Crossword people are seriously weird and also 200 years old

You would think it would be something of a democratic crisis, if it’s very publicly demonstrated that bad actors in politics can win power within their party and then over the country with a project based on lying to, and then robbing and fucking over the people who vote for them. It seems bad!

wearily scheduling a post for 18 months time, asking "this you?"
Thread from Dunt saying:

That Burnham speech was fucking brilliant.
Crammed with big ideas, era-defining structural changes to the way the country is run. Hugely ambitious, but deliverable. Expressed with compelling emotional language, which side-steps culture war divisions.
"Good growth is every postcode and hope in every heart" is an excellent phrase, which could work as the operational motto of an administration.
If done correctly, No.10 North could fix many problems with Downing Street. You need to avoid it becoming irrelevant by its distance from Whitehall. This is achievable by staffing it with large-scale complete teams (poss the entire policy and delivery units with the former working on coordination).
Very encouraging to hear Burnham rail against the whipping system, the pathologically adversarial culture of Westminster, the departmental silos, the suffocating centralisation of the British state. He gets it.
The instinctive reaction right now is lazy, sleep-walking cynicism, or sullen don't-give-me-hope despair. But the truth is: someone with very good communication skills, the right diagnosis and a reforming zeal is about to become prime minister. That seems pretty fucking encouraging to me.
