Stuck in the silt of unspoken words,
I wait in the sand for the tide.
A heavy shell, tightly sealed,
guarding the pearls inside.

My heart has drifted into the dark,
awash in the quiet grey,
while all the pages I never sent
float further and further away.

King of the Mountain (2005). Acrylic on paper. 36 x 23.5 cm £395 +P&P I was listening a lot to Aerial by Kate Bush in 2005. I took a track from that album as the title for this one as it seemed to fit. Inspired by a photo of the Lakes, UK. Email me at: nicktankardart@gmail.com to purchase.
An acrylic painting of a dramatic sky with a beam of sunlight illuminating a green valley surrounded by dark mountains. One side of a mountain seems to have a face, the King of the Mountain?
Atmospheric.

The poem in black text over a mostly white background with a mug shot of a person holding a teddy bear that has been altered with filters and in photoshop to look vaguely like a dodgy sketch.
Bear.
together we have been places
hidden from unkind faces
skipped through rain-soaked days
starred in poorly-written plays
fallen undaintily out of trees
been lost under autumn leaves
holed up inside blanket forts
read stories of horror and other sorts
watched countless films and television
sought clarity through indecision
faced fear and lies and betrayal
fought sticks and stones to no avail
been examined, x-rayed, and compared
healed and tended wounds we shared
kept secrets too terrible to tell
navigated our way through hell
held confidence and blood and tears
held each others hands for forty years
witnessed quietly all there was to be seen
the very best friend there has ever been

Working on a new piece; thinking about star thistles, how in the western US they are an invasive and noxious weed that readily takes over land that has been disturbed and degraded. or something.
A pencil sketch of two women embracing, surrounded by star thistles. One woman has star thistle spines protruding from her body and pressing against the skin of the other woman attempting to hold her close.

Seeking Starlight.
seeking starlight
in a landscape that bleeds
together in colours
no chart could identify
and light ever shifting
hides everyday monsters
in the periphery

seeking understanding
in a mindscape confined
by competitive suffering
where judgement
and condemnation
are conflated and
sold as refinement

seeking compassion
in a heartscape overwhelmed
where hope dwells in shadows
fear controls and measures
and love languishes
in a graveyard
of meaningless gestures

Heart Open.
I want to hear everything
you are willing to tell me
all you have done and seen
it is all of interest to me
every place you have ever been
all that has happened
exciting or mundane
every single thought and feeling
entirety of your heart and brain
I care to know
all you have been through
all you envision and dream
that you have ever aspired to
all that is you
is precious to me
you are always deserving
of the space and time
if you wanted it
I’d give you all of mine

'Water Spirit' - watercolour on board. I definitely need to be hanging about in pools In the shade of a forest in this heat. #watercolour #folklore #fairytales #fantasyart #waterytart
a pale female form stands in a dark pool in a forest of pines. It is nighttime and the figure stands looking at the viewer with black eyes, her white hair falling around her and spiralling out into the water. Fairies float around her and she gives off an ethereal light.

If I compile another poetry volume, should I post about it or upload it quietly to mitigate the disappointment when no one reads it? Or just leave it to rot on my hard drive? I bought the ISBNs, I suppose. Not sure what the point of that was. Or this. Pointless creeping thoughts in the quiet hours.

Pandora.
it is a conceit, by the way
saying I will not be upset
if you do not respond
so I can pretend I am
allowed to have a say
giving you a way out
rather than simply being
ignored
it makes me no less sad
to be shown I do not matter
it happens anyway
memory frays
I will sit here
keeping them all
for you
the tattered rags
faint scent lingering
of faded flowers
with fragile hues
and scent mingling
until they all smell
the same
precious treasures
kept within
a decorative box
just a little thing
I cannot let go of

#ও☉❢☉✑ #poetry #writing #micropoetry #blueskywriters #writingcommunity Vampire Painting by Edvard Munch
A shroud of copper, spun from grief,
falls heavy on the hidden face,
where tenderness and shadowed thief
lock in a desperate embrace.

Is it a healing, quiet balm,
or midnight drawing out the spark?
The bleeding edges of the calm
surrender softly to the dark.

A winter song, spun small and shrill,
Lured wandering souls into the gloom,
To leave their dreams upon the hill
And follow music to their doom.
They wandered through the heavy white,
Starved for a single spark to hold,
But morning only brought them night,
And wrapped their restless blood in cold.
The starlight fades to bitter grey;
The wind has blown the music back.
I turn my frozen face away,
As winter covers every track.

Quiet Embrace.
I wish I had words
to wrap you up
in a gentle embrace
grant your mind peace
your heart ease
give you warmth
hold you safe
to let tensions dissolve
be a comforting place
where pain and sorrow
every pensive ache
seeps out with grace
where understanding
and acceptance
fill empty space
to let you truly feel it
in the depths of your soul
you are honestly loved
you are honestly safe

Layering very light glazes of pencil for the right effects. I start off with sepia red and peridot to create shadows. I’ll go over that with brown ochre and Venetian red to pull it all together. This is just the first pass to map it out. I’ll do this 5-10 times until it all gets pulled together.

What you erase is as important as what you draw. 2022. Worms Headley. Charcoal and pencil on toned paper. Having a paper that works as a midtone leaves you so much room to put down and pick up with charcoal. I’m just using my eraser the same way I would a pencil.

A quick look at cloud rendering in soft pastel. This really just boils down to deciding where to pull the lights over the darks and where to push the darks into the lights to create shape and depth. The goal is to trick the eye into perceiving more topography than is actually there.

The ancient roots don’t count the rings,
Nor do the rivers track the miles.
The peak ignores the change of kings,
And in its silent patience, smiles.

Before the first clock split the day,
The moss had carpeted the stone.
It asks no hours to fade away,
Content to merely be, alone.

For nature breathes a single breath,
No yesterday, no future shore.
A constant dance of birth and death,
Existing now, and evermore.

The dark takes root
where sunbeams used to play,
A quiet theft,
the passing of the day.
The world retracts
its vibrant, waking crown,
As velvet ink
spills softly upside down.
And in the space
where brilliant colours bled,
The stars step out
to claim the sky instead.

I softened the shadows and gave her gown more jewel-like hues by making the shadows a deeper veridian green and laying warmer tones over them. Pencil layers are usually applied in thin veils of color. I probably had 10-12 layers of very transparent pencil for the finished piece.
