I think it’s really funny that I just lost subscribers after sending out the part of my dissertation lit review on queer temporality. either it's academia or gay shit you're not into, and in either case, where did you think you were?

Do yourself a favor. Read these 7 pages by @lilymasonphd.bsky.social right now. It is the most concise explanation of the current situation in U.S. politics I've seen and it captures why calls to reduce "polarization" can ultimately worsen the problem 🧵 www.journalofdemocracy.org/articles/pol...

Polarization Is Not the Problem | Journal of Democracy
Americans have never been angrier with one another. But polarization is not the disease—it is the response to a revanchist movement seeking to roll back sixty years of social progress.

My biggest frustration with writing is that quite often, the SWOOP that takes a book from midlist to BIG DEAL is pure luck, and I personally can't do anything to make it happen. Publishing is not a meritocracy. It's skill + time + luck, and all you can do is be in position for possible liftoff.

So much outrage and energy is spent on low-hanging targets because higher ones seem out of reach, but it only ends up serving a sense of false justice. People end up training themselves to prefer the satisfaction of being right over actually effecting change.
