People only really give a shit because they represent the shift towards emphasizing the paper visuals as a Gimmick™. It's not even a bad visual style even if I prefer the puppet animation of ttyd/super, but because it's in "bad games" it just is bad to people now.

I think it's interesting how the direction Paper Mario took with its writing tarnished a genuinely decent and okay visual direction all because of the content it's associated with. If Paper Mario stayed on course after TTYD I guarantee you no one would mind the outlines.
