It is complicated! The point made about parody is a good one… will be interesting to see how this plays out 🤔

“The company, which is suing Wiley for a ‘nominal’ $1 in damages plus legal fees, said that it took action after Wiley filed a trademark application in September to use the brand Pattie Gonia to sell clothing and promote environmental activism, which it claims would ‘irreparably harm’ its brand.”

A humiliating November if people actually go out and vote - so everyone remember to do that, ok? Make a plan, double-check your registration status, vote your ass off and bring a friend

I’m surprised I’m not seeing more discussion of the online learning cash cow in all these articles about the scourge of Ed tech. Most higher ed admins don’t care about learning quality, they care about enrollment and grants and donors.

I really think it’s important to underline that there was apparently no security breach. The gunman was confronted and stopped where he should have been according to the design—at the magnetometer perimeter. What this piece argues for is an *expansion* of the security perimeter in time and space.

As a librarian who doesn’t have many opportunities to experiment in a meaningful way (i.e. to confidently add to the discourse) I do appreciate y’all who are experimenting, sharing your findings, and being willing to articulate the uncertainty in between all that - it helps so much 🎉

Open minds and open discourses are important, especially for a technology that’s still rather new and evolving. As with any info seeking situation sometimes an “AI enhanced” search will be a benefit and sometimes it won’t. And it will take time and experimentation to figure it out

To my surprise I got invited to be on a panel here called "The Problem of AI" and took the opportunity to try to shift the discussion from boosterism & normalization, however "thoughtful and deliberative," & toward the political economy of higher education nathankhensley.net/uncategorize...
To understand these dynamics of intensified inequality or splitting, we have to shift away from whether ChatGPT can or can’t write good papers or how bad the “hallucinations” are, and toward an analysis of the political economy of higher education and the accelerating role of corporate interests, and their proxies in boards of directors and trustees, in defining the scene of learning. On this understanding, AI products are best understood not as technologies of information (as their backers prefer them to be discussed) but of labor management and the accelerated concentration of wealth.

I appreciate this take, I go back and forth about the pro/cons of turning on Primo Research Assistant considering the issue it has with “controversial topics” (that you so helpfully explained in a past post). Is it anymore helpful to the user if there’s all this baggage to unpack? Etc.
