I know this isn’t a train station, but: I’m taking a break from here and other social media. Not tearing anything down, just deleting apps off my phone I’m easy to find if you want to talk science 🧪 🌎

I defended my PhD last week!🍾🎉 I’m proud of the work I put into each of my projects. I’ve grown so much as a scientist thanks to guidance from my advisor and lab mates. Also, I was so excited that some of my close friends and parents were able to make it out to my defense! Thank you all!!
Poster for my defense seminar. The title reads: “Evaluating mechanisms of resilience: from method comparisons across taxa to lab & natural experiments in threespine stickleback.” There’s a photo of seine net enclosures in a lake, threespine stickleback in a tank, and me looking into a microscope along the top of the poster. My headshot is in the bottom cornerI’m smiling while standing at a podium presenting. The slide shows a photo of a map, an aerial image of lakes, and a fish. A group photo of the Weber lab. A photo of me and my parents

AI use is rampant but my feed is full of “[issue of the day] is why I don’t use it” posts and replies Now, I know that I curate my following and followers lists, but… something’s not adding up. Are folks simply overstating their aversion/abstinence for ‘likes’?

“Best” is considered too informal by some as an email sign off, so I’ve been mulling an alternative for a while. For whatever reason, “best wishes” never really called out to me, but I recently thought of a modification that works for me: “best fishes” 🐟 ☺️

As the continent burns, it's good to remember that the foundations of our current plight were laid centuries ago, when we hunted beavers to near extinction (for "fashion") and vilified cultural burning

In the last 12 months of Angus Reid tracking, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has fallen from her highest approval (51% in June 2025) down to her lowest (39% in June 2026). Among all premiers, she now also has the highest level of "strongly disapprove" (46%). 🔗: angusreid.org/premiers-per...
Line chart showing Smith's approval rating in the mid-40s range from March 2023 through to a high of 51% in June 2025 then down to a low of 39% in June 2026.

June 2026 also had Smith's "strongly disapprove" at 46%, which is higher than premiers in any other province. (Ontario's Doug Ford was at 45% "strongly disapprove", BC's David Eby at 37%.)

Bill 29, introduced today, is another attempt by Danielle Smith and the UCP to further privatize health care in Alberta and create a two-tier system, where some people can skip the line for diagnostic services while others are left waiting as the public system continues to struggle.
