The library provided access to reading but also to the intimate political and social networks within Georgian Britain. Its use influenced how individuals understood political change, and their interaction with campaigns for the abolition of slavery and political reform.

Two communities and libraries are examined in depth: the Bristol Library Society and Leighton Library, Dunblane (@leightonlibrary.bsky.social). I examine the books, borrowings and administrative records of both, the private records of their members and local political and associational archives.

These libraries provided their members with the latest publications and a political education in the committee politics through which they were managed. This aspect of the subscription library was particularly valued by younger generations preparing for a future political career.

The book examines the political significance of the subscription library. These institutions, which existed across the British Isles by 1800, are sometimes called the precursors to the public library but they were collectively owned and privately managed by their communities of subscribers.

In it, I study political reading in Britain between the French Revolution in 1789 and the first Reform Act in 1832. I propose a new approach to political history by analysing the politics of reading or how reading shaped personal and political identities and motivated political engagement.
