As we enter the final month before the midterms, don't get cocky. If anything, it's time to ramp up the work and pour it on. Check your registration. Vote early. Push your friends and family too. Look for local places to help out. Phone bank and write postcards. Volunteer for Election Day.

Velan Studios in 2020.

In the front center is Mario in a red Kart, driving towards the viewer, Bowser Jr. behind to the right, Luigi behind to the left. The background strip is someone playing from the couch.

It was a year none of us will forget. As COVID reshaped everything, a small team in a bubble worked on-site to finish Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit while the rest of the studio went fully remote. Together, we shipped it in October as our first release with Nintendo. It proved that "it's never been done before" was exactly the point.

Super Mario Sunshine is surprisingly more realistic than later Mario games in one specific aspect: here, Mario will start drowning if he hangs on to a ledge in such a way that water is flowing into his nose and mouth, as one would in real life.

Observe Mario holding on to a ledge that water is flowing over in Super Mario Galaxy (left) and Super Mario Odyssey (right). If realistic physics applied, he should start drowning since his nostrils and mouth are covered by water flowing into them.
However, in these games the air depletion/drowning state is tied to the swimming animation. As long as Mario is not visibly swimming, he cannot be drowning even if he is covered by water.
In Super Mario Sunshine, however, air depletion is decoupled from swimming as an action, allowing Mario to realistically start drowning in this situation (note him flashing red and his air meter depleting).
However, he is saved by Sunshine's (also unique among 3D Mario platformers) ledge tiredness mechanic. After hanging on for 20 seconds, Mario will let go. This is also realistic, since why would he let himself drown?

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

A real surprise to me, fixing bugs actually, you know, fixed things with some games, now Flesh Feast, a somewhat controversial game, is playable. Id share a screenshot but they only captured a fraction of the screen, so next time?

Alien Race was a Heat-exclusive title for, apparently, up to 30 players, showing around 1997. I don't think it ever had a full release that stuck around any period of time. I think this is the first time it has gotten in-game in nearly 28 years? More work to do though.

We were building two games at once. Knockout City was deep in development with EA, and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit was engineered from the ground up with Nintendo. These were two major partners and two very different bets, but we were one team going all-in on both of them.
