Jax is funny because he seemed like a good closer option at draft time, then tanked while underlying skills were still good, then made a great conversion to SP. Definitely need to keep in mind that Rays SP conversions won't happen at beginning of season

The McCarthy/Nunez types are the flip side of Austin Hays a could years ago. All are boring compilers who aren't good baseball players, but PAs are PAs. McCarthy/Nunez had little competition and cost very little. Hays was on a team with 79 other outfielders and cost more. Context and cost matter.

I missed on Gelof because his underlying skills were so bad in the past. But things changed and I didn't adjust on those changes. Good one.

Jake McCarthy. Had a clear everyday role for the Rockies, was barely drafted, finished as a top 40 player.

Here's an example of where Stuff+ can help: Bryan Baker as TB closer in 2026. Baker had put up sporadic months of very good metrics with the Orioles, balanced by down months and little late inning opportunity. When the Rays gave him a shot, he's instant pickup because he's already shown upside.

Who's the epitome of a player who won fantasy leagues this year? I'm thinking of guys who were (barely) draftable, and whom the smart owners were on at that point. I'll throw out Nasim Nunez. Clear path to a job, good team fit, big production (SB) upside.

Good info. I think one next step is to convert each tier to a dollar value. My hunch is that top tier, "reliable" closers are worth more than they used to be. Yes, you could cobble together multiple closers to get 40 saves, but there are opportunity costs.

"The Red Sox were never very good this year." You can complain about a lot of things (and people are) but the team went diverging like 30-5 at one point. I think they were very good during that.

A thing I'm wondering about for the Red Sox is how good their hitting development actually is. They've had some minor league breakouts who haven't hit in the majors (Campbell.)They've had veterans take a step back (Duran.) But they've also had breakouts (Gasper, Romo) and FA success (Contreras.)

Because Win Probability Added is wins relative to avg. To measure value, you must account for replacement level. RPs have a higher rep level than SPs, and closers don't deserve 100% of their leverage usage. Here are the 2026 pitching WAR leaders accounting for that: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

With the MLB playoff field now set, it's time once again for my annual "Multiple Shots at a Ring" All-Stars. Here they are (unless I missed someone), sorted by Fangraphs' World Series chances.
26 players have multiple shots at a ring this year, led by Hunter Feduccia being at 41.5% chance and Charlie Barnes at 36.4%
