There have been convincing records in 2026 of Buff-tailed Villa (V. hottentotta) in Kent and Essex. Please check carefully if you find something that looks like Dune Villa (V. modesta) but in locations away from the dune habitats.

Huge congrats to @jasboparai.bsky.social on what I'm sure will be an essential book for an underworked group. But absolute shame on CABI & @royentsoc.bsky.social for their new pricing. £125 for a 25-species handbook is unreasonable and will prevent it from reaching its deserved audience.

Received the pdf of my paper adding Philotelma parvum to the UK list in the upcoming issue of Dipterists Digest. A rather obscure little Ephydridae (shore fly) collected from the New Forest, emphasising again the importance of New Forest mires for rare Diptera drive.google.com/file/d/1FCwH...
Composite image of the title and introduction of the paper with one of the figures showing the head from above.
Text: Philotelma parvum (Kramer) a shore fly (Diptera, Ephydridae) new to Britain from the New Forest National Park
SAM J. THOMAS Hayling Island, Hampshire; sjthomasbotany@gmail.com Summary Philotelma parvum (Kramer, 1917) (Diptera, Ephydridae) is recorded for the first time from the British Isles, based on one specimen taken in June 2023 from the New Forest National Park, Hampshire, England. The identification and distribution of P. parvum are discussed.
Introduction A single male Philotelma was swept by the author from the margin of Hatchet Pond in the New Forest National Park in June 2023. The specimen keyed to Philotelma parvum (Kramer, 1917) based on the revision of the genus by Mathis et al. (2009). This identification was confirmed by examination of the male genitalia. A review of published distributional data (Mathis et al. 2009; Zatwarnicki 2011), the most recent update to the checklist of the Diptera of the British Isles (Chandler 2024) and consultation with UK experts (Martin Drake and Tony Irwin, both 2024 pers. comm.) shows this specimen to represent the first record of P. parvum in the British Isles.

It seems like there are a few issues with Dryopteris names on PSL @panspecieslisting.bsky.social. Nothing is solid with this group but see attached from Fred the other month. Unless the current approach is based on expert input I think some need to be removed, see comments in alt text.
Image of a table showing the main taxa in the Dryopteris affinis group in the UK along with their ploidy levels from a presentation by Fred Rumsey.

- D. "robusta" - not a valid name and generally treated as a morphotype of D. borreri
- D. kerryensis - generally treated as a subspecies of D. affinis
- D. cluthensis - published as subspecies of D. affinis and not on Fred's list
- D. lacunosa - published at species level but is generally treated as a subspecies or morphotype of D. borreri.
- D. rigida - a synonym of D. submontana
- D. paleaceolobata listed as one of Fred's top level taxa but also generally recorded at subspecies level
Suggest:
Remove D. "robusta", D. cluthensis, D. rigida, D. lacunosa and D. kerryensis
Retain D. paleaceolobata, D. pseudodisjuncta and D. pseudocomplexa based on Fred's table
