There have been convincing records in 2026 of Buff-tailed Villa (V. hottentotta) in Kent and Essex. Please check carefully if you find something that looks like Dune Villa (V. modesta) but in locations away from the dune habitats.

Picture three is definitely Saussurea but I think the first two pictures look more like Hieracium, probably sect. Alpina

Leptometopa latipes (Milichiidae)...2-3mm freeloader fly. Seem to be few records nationally, but conservative estimate of 5000 today at Bempton Cliffs, where I suspect they associate with seabird guano. They were all over the cliff edge hand rails! @dipteristsforum.bsky.social @ynuorg.bsky.social

All H. maculata I'd say. The flower stem just below the capitulum is expanded and the capitula themselves are very large. The hawkweed would have more or less uniformly narrow flower stems and more, smaller capitula. Also the big somewhat lettuce-like basal leaves are typical

Lovely pics and great finds, nice to see people appreciating hawkweed and whitebeams. I think your last pic is actually Hypochaeris maculata, also a mega rarity

Basal leaves too rounded for Heath I think, that and the location make me think one of the North American Gamochaeta species. If so then very difficult to ID to species but @trisnorton.bsky.social might be able to help

Yeah, I hear that previous publishers FSC weren't prepared for competition on the RES publishing contract and got outbid. Still, @royentsoc.bsky.social should make the right choice and go back to an affordable publisher if they actually want to make insects more accessible

Sam Thomas @sjthomasbotany.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
I wondered that too but it's two tribes rather than the subfamily. Not a problem in the slightest other than the price

Sam Thomas @sjthomasbotany.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
Same here, clicked on it ready to buy and if it had been old RES prices I already would have bought but doubt I can really justify it

We really need high quality biological records for under-recorded groups. These come from amateurs many of whom won't be able to afford this book. Doesn't seem to match up very well to @royentsoc.bsky.social strategy to make insects accessible to all ages and backgrounds
Screen shot of RES website with the following text: The Royal Entomological Society introduces its strategy for 2025-28
As the Royal Entomological Society moves towards its 200th anniversary, we are focused on ensuring that all aspects of our work support our vision to enrich the world with insect science.

Alongside a continued commitment to world-class research and scientific excellence, this strategy places strong emphasis on education, outreach and wider engagement, from inspiring the next generation of scientists to making insect science accessible to curious minds of all ages and backgrounds. It also underlines the importance of working with policymakers and decision-makers to ensure insect science is at the forefront of the choices shaping our collective future.

Huge congrats to @jasboparai.bsky.social on what I'm sure will be an essential book for an underworked group. But absolute shame on CABI & @royentsoc.bsky.social for their new pricing. £125 for a 25-species handbook is unreasonable and will prevent it from reaching its deserved audience.

I think that as with other Rosaceae such as Sorbus s.l. only leaves on the mature 'short shoots' are really informative. Agree this looks like there are other things going on but probably not identifiable based on these

Other thing that works well is a 96-well plate with strips of snap on lids of the kind used for PCR, nice and easy but obviously means not storing the specimen and gen together so needs a good cross-reference system

Tried various things, not found anything I'm fully happy with. Currently use 3mm internal diameter PVC flexible tube with a 3mm solid plastic bung. I then cut one section of tube and two of bung and fill with a drop of glycerol. Quite fiddly, sometimes leaks and heavy so spins pins in the storebox

It's not asylum seekers who jack up rents, undermine the NHS, hold down wages and keep people insecure. It's capital. The role of the far right is to shift the blame for decades of economic attacks by the rich and powerful onto powerless people who have only just arrived here.
