Great FT piece on the UK's history with the IMF by Plender. 👇 giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/... My own research suggests that those lessons don't stick. Within 5 years, spending on the public sector wage bill typically rebounds to pre-loan levels (open access): link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Controversial? Yes. Disconcerting to see pieces from Luxor and the Valley of the Kings out of context? Also yes. But the Grand Egyptian Museum is visually and architecturally stunning. Worth a visit. #Archaeology

my absolute favorite thing is emailing someone in Europe and getting an OOO message that's like "what are you doing trying to email me in August, please try again at the end of the month like a decent human" and suddenly remembering that civilization does in fact exist

US trade debates go back 250 years, but today national security is increasingly used to justify tariffs, thereby expanding the protectionist coalition. From my @chathamhouse.org remarks: blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/20...

In July, Trump placed tariffs on imports from nearly every country, citing forced labor concerns. Blanket tariffs like this aren't industrial policy. They don't target sectors to build capacity, they just tax across the board. More evidence of a US shift. Read more here: doi.org/10.1017/S147...
