AI boom and trade resilience to Middle East crisis lift outlook, but gains to be uneven
Global trade proved more resilient than expected in the first half of 2026 despite the disruption caused by the Middle East conflict, as supply chains adapted and strong investment in artificial intelligence provided a powerful boost to goods trade. However, the resilience was not uniform, with services trade and some regions more exposed to the effects of the conflict. WTO economists have therefore raised the forecast for merchandise trade growth in 2026 while lowering the outlook for services trade.

@sebastienfmjean.bsky.social & Jean-Pierre Landau argue that China's widening trade surplus reflects not just macroeconomic imbalances but a growth model aiming at industrial & technological dominance, sustained by high saving, capital controls and exchange-rate management. cepr.org/voxeu/column...
Figure shows the average of subsidies by firms' headquarters location in the automotive sector (percentage of annual firm revenue). Subsidies comprise government grants, income-tax concessions, and below-market borrowings.

China's trade surplus is widening, its manufactured exports are surging, and the political backlash is intensifying. This column argues that the widening trade surplus reflects not just macroeconomic imbalances but a growth model aiming at industrial and technological dominance, sustained by high saving, capital controls and exchange-rate management. The resulting comparative advantage, engineered through scale, subsidies and learning, is self-reinforcing and hard to challenge. Partners should coalesce around a common agenda combining renminbi appreciation alongside stricter international disciplines on subsidies and market access.

Important - and on the nail - point by the Prime Minister here. (www.ft.com/content/ef10... Burnham clears path to EU summit with post-Brexit breakthrough - £).
He noted that the proposed deal on removing barriers to agrifood trade would mean that Britain would have to adopt EU rules, a step that he said raised legitimate questions about whether the UK should start to reverse Brexit.
He told the BBC: "But then we're a rule taker, and then people will say, 'Well, hang on a minute, should Britain be that?'
"So we're in this position now where we can't really avoid the question anymore as to what is our long-term relationship."
