Fear of being poor (again) and un-housed can do a lot to make you miserable while doing something you use to enjoy. Would love to spend my free-time focusing on things I want to do or build vs needing to decompress / disassociate instead.

This. And let's not forget: Haiti has no functional government right now, only because the US was so careless that it allowed dudes in Florida 🤦🏿‍♂️ to use Covid funds 🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️ to hire mercenaries 🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️ to take out Haiti's president.😮 Which country on Earth could survive such a thing without further violence?

Listen, I just think it's weird that the same people who are saying they're worried that AI is going to wipe out humanity are also eager for military contracts that will give AI control of weapons.

The good news is, that this not true.🤷🏿‍♂️ We keep trying to rewrite history, and pretend that Trump happened, and then tech billionaires became radicalized, and then they supported him. We ignore that Thiel helped Trump get elected in the 1st place, and Bannon and Epstein helped start the alt-right.

Proudly posting in slack that "I finished my reviews 2 hours early" because they were due at Midnight

Siyegen @siyegen.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
I've been neck deep in reviews the last two weeks, so much that a direct report today over slack was like "you alright dude? You're responding in slack very formally". Guess my brain shift to review mode applies across all forms of writing, not just the reviews.

The evaporation of inertia for new projects means most anyone can build and prototype a tool or service. But we're also losing the place to have conversations about "should we build this", which helped guide ideas in the past. Long way of saying: Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Pleased to finally announce... Abdication, the last Southern Reach novel! "There will come the days of the watcher, the drowned woman and the shadow of a man who keeps falling apart with each step, but first comes the moment the birds appear at night from the gaps between the stars, far from home."
Publishers Marketplace Deal Report, August 6, 2026:

Jeff Vandermeer's ABDICATION, the last novel in the Southern Reach series, in which an ornithologist exiled to a remote coast stumbles on a terrifying secret,  a self-proclaimed king pursues a mystery hidden in a strange weather station, and a man who can become a cormorant is tasked with a deadly mission through a future landscape transformed by Area X, for publication in October 2027, in a significant deal, to Jenna Johnson at Farrar, Straus, by Joseph Veltre at the Gersh Agency and Alex Kohner at Yorn Levine (world).

It’s worth noting that Taco Bell identified the source before the FDA did, and promptly pulled it from their stores. The FDA didn’t even name the source until Taylor Farms outed themselves, and hasn’t issued a recall. Basically, Taco Bell is now a more reliable authority than the FDA.

microsoft is in full damage control mode following last week's layoffs. its main strategy so far? namedrop sequels to popular series at every turn. but despite what execs like asha sharma might want you to think, those series were made by people, and now they'll never be the same
Todd Howard just shared plans for the Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Starfield franchises. These worlds have earned a special place with hundreds of millions of people over many years. I'm looking forward to what's next, including the partnership with Obsidian on a new Fallout game and closer collaboration with ZeniMax Online Studios on The Elder Scrolls. The achievements of these franchises are remarkable: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has crossed 65 million units sold, becoming one of the 10 best-selling games of all time, Fallout 4 has also crossed 35 million units sold, joining the top 25, and Starfield will soon reach over 1 billion hours played.
This statement sucks so bad that it makes my blood boil. Look what the franchises did, all by themselves! Look what they’ve accomplished, of their own volition, thanks to their own intrinsic goodness! So many big numbers, which translate to giant heaps of cash in the bank accounts of execs and shareholders! Never mind the people who spent decades painstakingly crafting the many games, stories, and other creative endeavors that corporate ghouls now so happily flatten into “franchises,” erasing themes, meaning, and human beings in favor of empty iconography.

This is how the people running the show at Xbox—and countless companies besides—view games, not to mention everything else in their robotic, colorless lives. Numbers and lines trending ever upward. Fuel for platitudes and faux-inspirational nonsense directed at the LinkedIn hivemind, of which they all paradoxically believe they’re the main character. Another stepping stone toward the next bigger, better thing. No ultimate destination, no camaraderie, no soul. Just an endless ladder that leads to the void regardless of which way you climb.

Big gaming companies lay off the people that work on games we love and then turn around and announce remakes and vague details to try and distract from the decisions. It sucks that it often works. But what are games without the people that made them? A corporate entity isn't an artist or creator.
