I find it funny when people talk about how games are this art form that can make you feel emotions, but then you bring up something like wanting more games to have timers & people will say its bad design "because it makes me anxious" So emotions only allowed through story, not gameplay. I see "Auteur theory doesn't work in AAA gamedev, it's a team effort!" and other opinions like it said a lot, but it feels like it's promoting the idea that everyone that works on a game is interchangeable and can easily be replaced. Especially when coming from publishers.

What stands out about the Zelda shot is how they cranked up the brightness to compensate for the original GBA's terrible screen. It's common across GBA games, and it makes everything look washed out. The GBA is the only mainstream console that I've ever hated specifically because of its hardware.

Something I've remarked upon for a long time now is that the main reason why Nintendo weathers the ups and downs of the video game industry better than any other major player is because they have a pretty good understanding that it is an entertainment industry first and a technology industry second.

Keio Flying Squadron might have been the first game I ever played whose US publisher wasn't ashamed of its anime style retail packaging art. Or maybe they were just too lazy/rushed to redraw the JP art, as even the title screen logo and menu graphics were just subtitled instead of redrawn.

I'm sampling and curating my sets of various Sega console ROMs, as one does, and have noticed that some Game Gear games have a soft-reset command (1+2+Start). Now it's got me wondering what the earliest Genesis & GG games have this. It was standard from Saturn onward but kinda rare beforehand.

I get this reaction, but if a publisher paid me for 10 years for this job and gave me this much free reign, then I'd probably do the same thing. Everyone gets fired after every project these days regardless of success, so you may as well go for broke. Wild that they *got* that much free reign, tho.

to put on my game design propeller beanie for a moment, i think systems feel the "richest" to me when the micro/macro decisions feed into each other, like shmups have micro (dodging, killing, scoring) and macro (resource management over the run) and you adjust your approach to one based on the other

Self-playing games take microdecisions away from you in favour of macrodecisions. You don't need to choose where to aim your gun every second, but you will need to decide what ammo upgrade to select for the next level. This is an inviting approach for game designers (and not unique to the self-playing game). It allows designers to sidestep the difficult psuedoart of "gamefeel", and player skill becomes less of an issue to account for. You can focus on the metagame, the upgrades and abilities and perks and extras. The exofun. All you need to do is make the braintickling numbers work, and then make it look flashy.

But what if some genres are the microdecisions?

At this point I'm generally more likely to be intrigued by a game that goes out of its way to limit what the player can do, rather than just tack on more "schmovement." To paraphrase @kayin.moe, designing the mechanics is the easy part. Making levels that make good use of them is what kills you.

Astro Boy Omega Factor is a case study in how RPG leveling systems can stifle an action game. Turns a varied combat system into an exercise in tedium and feels less than the sum of its parts. Also having to clear out every single mook before you can advance makes the action wear thin quickly.
