Happy Friday! You've made it to the end of the week. To celebrate, here's a drawing from of a very feisty eel 1908. The drawing is titled "Two Men on a Boat are Attacked by a Sea Monster." But that's wrong. It's a big ol' eel, and maybe those dudes shouldn't be so mean to it. 🗃️🧪
B&W ink pen drawing of two men in a small boat, with a large eel. The sky on the horizon has been colored an uneven blue. The water looks choppy, with small waves near the boat and bigger ones just behind it.

The eel is rearing up, and facing the man at the front of the boat. From its posture, it seems to be attacking him. It's expression, however is somewhat calm, suggesting that it is either: a) very comfortable with violence; or b) just wants to talk. The eel has a line coming out of it's mouth, and has probably been hooked and hauled into the boat. You'd want to talk, too.

For their part, the men look distressed. The one facing the eel, at the front of the boat, is holding an oar and about to fall into the water. The man at the back has a club, and is probably about to go after the eel. He is wearing a wide tie, which is not appropriate garb for eel fighting.

The eel is probably named Frenelder, and the two men are likely name Samuaxe and Vera Similitude (Vera had weird parents). In different circumstances they might all enjoy cucumber sandwiches together. But here...now...in this boat.? No. All that is left to them is the Great Kinetic Dance.

The drawing is from: Wellcome Library V0049550; https://wellcomeimages.org/indexplus/image/V0049550.html

Photo by Antonio Prata, depicting Iron Rooster, crowing..

"Haned Kadunud" (tr. Lost Geese) narrates a pastoral tale where the singer is tasked with guarding geese and hens.
A sudden wind and lightning from the north scatter the birds, prompting a journey across the land to search for them.
Along the way, the singer encounters ploughmen and other people, asking if they have seen the geese, described as "golden-naped" and "silver-crowned".
The lyrics evoke a sense of longing, responsibility, and connection to nature, characteristic of Estonian folk storytelling.

"When anger’s slain you sleep at ease.
When anger’s slain there is no sorrow.
Anger has a poisonous root and a sweet tip, O Vāsava.
The noble ones praise its killing, for when it’s slain there is no sorrow."

“So it was, on that misty morning, that Brenda set off for the capital. She knew not what she would find there, only that the time had come to move on - away from small-minded rural attitudes and people who called her ‘Oreo’ and ‘the wide panda’ - to seek a more fulfilling life.”

A belted galloway cow walking into the mist, on a Dorset lane, towards a bold, unpredictable future. You can see half of my car in the background. It looks remarkably clean, by normal standards. When one of my wife's work colleagues asked her "What car does your husband drive?" she answered "I can't remember what make it is but it's the really dirty one that sometimes turns up in the car park here" and her colleague immediately said "Oh yes, I know the one."

Artwork by Bev Doolittle, titled 'Woodland Encounter'

The image depicts a winter woodland scene, mostly black & white, with a glorious red fox in the centre of the image, in a small glade within the monochrome Birch trees.

However, if you look a little closer, you may also be able to see two figures, Native American horsemen, sitting silently on piebald horses, almost indistinguishable from the black & white of the Birch forest and undergrowth..

Beautifully silent, still image; yet brimming with action & significance.

A few months back I was thrown a word from @gewb80260.bsky.social - Komorebi. It's a Japanese word, and its meaning is really beautiful. I haven't been anywhere in the past, or recently to find the right image, however, I've put some words together. Here they are. #Verse #poetry #Komorebi #Trees
Note: I haven't quite captured the essence of the word. No doubt I will continue to dance with it in the future.

Text:

Komorebi Dance

Numerous muted bulbous shapes,
sway delicately upon the
dark amber,
crumpled leaf strewn
earthen path,
as if moving to an
ancient rhythm known
only within the realm of trees

trees, the world over,
have learnt the magic
of capturing the sun’s light,
flirting with it as it filters through
branches, boughs, leaves, twigs,
bouncing it this way and that,
twirling, swirling it,
breaking, fracturing
its persistent forceful rays
to design a carpet of komorebi

an ethereal, luminous dance
of shadows and light

transforming any
tree darkened pathway
into a patchwork of
wonder, glamour,
and delightful mystery

but only for a short time
until a new dance emerges

Lovely limestone plaque carved with the face of an owl! 🦉❤️ The solemn gaze from across the centuries gives an air of ancient wisdom! From Egypt, Late Period–Ptolemaic Period, 400–30 BC. Met Museum 📷 by me #OwlishMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a small, roughly square-shaped piece of limestone carved to depict a frontal face of an owl. The owl has large, rounded eyes and a long, pointed beak highlighted with fine diagonal incised lines. The face is outlined by two symmetrical fan-like feather patterns with a raised border around the eyes, cheeks, and beak. Dimensions: Height 10.3 cm x Width 11.1 cm x Depth 2.5 cm This relief represents the ancient Egyptian owl hieroglyph 'm'. The limestone plaque is displayed in a glass case at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
