We TRIPLED our vote share. Second best byelection result in Green Party history. On a date that Labour chose to deliberately clash the same week as our conference. All with a brand new PM in previously a "safe" seat. Best response to all the absolute nonsense today? Join.greenparty.org.uk

There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.

Just enjoyed a timely talk by @lesliedavenport.bsky.social featuring the “climate emotions wheel” - a reminder there’s no one right way to feel about climate change, the important thing is to acknowledge and tend to the full range of emotions so they don’t come out sideways.
Climate Emotions Wheel - a multicolored wheel highlighting a range of climate emotions falling within four overarching categories:

Positivity, including interest, empowerment, inspiration, empathy, gratitude and hope

Fear, including overwhelm, panic, powerlessness, anxiety and worry

Sadness, including guilt, shame, grief, depression, loss, loneliness and despair

Anger, including disappointment, betrayal, frustration, outrage and indignation

May is now surely upon us, as is No Mow May. With insects in decline, some birds will find it difficult to find enough insects for their chicks, resulting in their starvation and death. Vanna Bartlett reminds us what we can do to help insects and all species that feed on them.

I miss Carl Sagan (1934-1996). From Cosmos to Contact, in books and on screen, his intellectual work has had a profound impact on me. In these days of embraced anti-intellectualism, his books should be revisited.
“I have a foreboding of America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time–when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all of the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; with our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what’s true, we slide almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

And when the dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites now down to 10 seconds or less, lowest-common-denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance.”
“If it takes a little myth and ritual to get us through a night that seems endless, who among us cannot sympathise and understand? We long to be here for a purpose even though, despite much self-deception, none is evident. The significance of our lives and our fragile planet is then determined only by our own wisdom and courage. We are the custodians of life’s meaning. We long for our parents to care for us, to forgive us our errors, to save us from our childish mistakes. But knowledge is preferable to ignorance. Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring fable. Modern science has been a voyage into the unknown, with a lesson in humility waiting at every stop. Our common sense intuitions can be mistaken. Our preferences don’t count. We do not live in a privileged reference frame. If we crave some cosmic purpose, then let us find ourselves a worthy goal.”
