I have a small idea what I'm doing. I'm working on a prison abolition game that engages people deeply in the policy choices that have created mass incarceration in the U.S. Emphasis on choices because there are other ways. silver-guillotine.itch.io

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

Police were responsible for nearly one in three homicides in Vallejo, California in 2012. They are also responsible for a large proportion of homicides by strangers across the US. This case shows the people of Vallejo may have been safer with a complete defunding, before that was a common idea
"A case in point: in 2008, officials in Vallejo, California, defended their police department by half after filing for bankruptcy during the Great Recession. 'Far from ushering in a new era of harmony between police and the people,' Peter Jamison wrote in thr Washington Post, 'the budget cuts worsened tensions between the department and the community and were followed by a dramatic surge in the officer's use of deadly force. Since 2009 the police have killed 20 people, an extraordinarily high number for such a small city. In 2012 alone, officers fatally shot 6 suspects. Nearly a third of the city's homicides that year were committed by law enforcement.' One thing Jamison initially failed to mention was that when Vallejo officials cut police funding in half, they did not provide additional funding for public health and social services agencies. "Defunding the police," then must be a policy of presence, not just of absence.

This is most policy debate: "The masses don't realize what we're doing is actually good for them. That's why we need to undermine democratic modes of participation even more to bring about what the wealthy want."

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

Also this Ladder of Citizen participation by Sherry Arnstein (1967) reminds me that few ideas are new! I've been thinking about and seeing some others talk about how therapy can individualize systemic problems, putting the onus on the individual to "fix" themselves, rather than society
A graphic depicting the Ladder of Citizen Participation as conceptualized by Sherry Arnstein (1967). The bottom of the ladder as the rungs labeled "Manipulation" and "Therapy", both categorized as nonparticipation. Going up the rungs are Informing, Consultation, and Placation, categorized as degrees of tokenism. Finally there is Partnership, Delegated Power, and Citizen Control at the top of the ladder, categorized as degrees of Citizen power.

Reading Bachrach and Baratz on power and political science vs sociological conceptions of it and thought this #quote was good
"Or, as Professor Schattschneider has so admirably put it:
All forms of political organization have a bias in favor of the eexploitation of some kinds of conflict and the suppression of others because organization is the mobilization of bias. Some issues are organized into politics while others are organized out."
