I have a small idea what I'm doing. I'm working on a prison abolition game that engages people deeply in the policy choices that have created mass incarceration in the U.S. Emphasis on choices because there are other ways. silver-guillotine.itch.io

Police were responsible for nearly one in three homicides in Vallejo, California in 2012. They are also responsible for a large proportion of homicides by strangers across the US. This case shows the people of Vallejo may have been safer with a complete defunding, before that was a common idea
"A case in point: in 2008, officials in Vallejo, California, defended their police department by half after filing for bankruptcy during the Great Recession. 'Far from ushering in a new era of harmony between police and the people,' Peter Jamison wrote in thr Washington Post, 'the budget cuts worsened tensions between the department and the community and were followed by a dramatic surge in the officer's use of deadly force. Since 2009 the police have killed 20 people, an extraordinarily high number for such a small city. In 2012 alone, officers fatally shot 6 suspects. Nearly a third of the city's homicides that year were committed by law enforcement.' One thing Jamison initially failed to mention was that when Vallejo officials cut police funding in half, they did not provide additional funding for public health and social services agencies. "Defunding the police," then must be a policy of presence, not just of absence.

Also this Ladder of Citizen participation by Sherry Arnstein (1967) reminds me that few ideas are new! I've been thinking about and seeing some others talk about how therapy can individualize systemic problems, putting the onus on the individual to "fix" themselves, rather than society
A graphic depicting the Ladder of Citizen Participation as conceptualized by Sherry Arnstein (1967). The bottom of the ladder as the rungs labeled "Manipulation" and "Therapy", both categorized as nonparticipation. Going up the rungs are Informing, Consultation, and Placation, categorized as degrees of tokenism. Finally there is Partnership, Delegated Power, and Citizen Control at the top of the ladder, categorized as degrees of Citizen power.

Reading Bachrach and Baratz on power and political science vs sociological conceptions of it and thought this #quote was good
"Or, as Professor Schattschneider has so admirably put it:
All forms of political organization have a bias in favor of the eexploitation of some kinds of conflict and the suppression of others because organization is the mobilization of bias. Some issues are organized into politics while others are organized out."

Recalls make it very clear that the products that have different brand names and different prices are all coming from the same place. I love the freedom to vote with my wallet that we have in the US. www.the-independent.com/life-style/w...
"The recall applies to eggs sold under the Country Morning, Cal-Maine Sunups, Brookshire's, Simple Truth, and Kroger brand names. They will have sell-by or best-by dates between July 20, 2026 and August 17, 2026."

Replace "country" with "fellow humans" since a radical might not hate their country, but they might recognize the harm of nation-states and arbitrary borders
"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naive and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair.

Jonathan Chait: famed understander of politics and re-definer of democracy. Following the only maxim one ever needs: "what I frame as the center of two extremes I've chosen must be correct and reasonable."
A screenshot of an article by Jonathan Chait in The Atlantic. The title is "There's nothing democratic about these socialists." At the bottom, the social media graphic for the article is cut off, but it is a wilting rose representing, one can only assume, the failing strength of the DSA.

Above is a short summary which starts with what might be the silliest take in the article "The organization is still called democratic socialists, 'but the term does not necessarily mean 'liberal democracy as Americans have traditionally defined it,' Chait writes. 'Many socialist thinkers define what they call 'true democracy as a system in which capitalism has been overturned and the proletariat classes have seized political power through their representative vanguard (that is, them).'

'This is not, obviously, how the group sells itself to the broader universe of left-leaning, mostly Democratic voters it is trying to attract,' Chait continues at the link. 'One can easily imagine a feedback loop in which DSA influence makes it harder for Democrats to win back moderate and Republican voters [lol, lmao even], causing the party to lose , causing its base to grow more distrustful of the party's leaders, thus making them more likely to nominate DSA candidates. But even to conceive of the DSA's entry to the party as mainly an electoral setback, as some glue liberals appear to be doing, is to miss the deeper significance of the group's influence."

In Nicaragua, gentlemen, the mouse kills the cat
A passage from Open Veins of Latin America reading: "and there were plenty of machetes; the flag flew from any handy stick, and the peasants moved through mountain tickets wearing strips of hide called huaraches instead of boots. Reading The Open Veins of Latin America right now and there is so much to unpack even now, 50 years after it was written. "It is much more profitable to consume coffee than to produce it."
An image of a passage from The Open Veins of Latin America which reads as follows:
"It is much more profitable to consume coffee than to produce it. In the United States and Europe coffee creates income and jobs and mobilized substantial capital; in Latin America it pays hunger wages and sharpens economic deformation. It provides work for more than 600,000 people in the United States: those who distribute and sell Latin American coffee there earn infinitely more than the Brazilians, Colombians, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, and Haitians who plant and harvest it on the plantations. And incredible as it seems, coffee - so ECLA tells us - puts more wealth into European state coffers than it leaves in the hands of producing countries. In effect, in 1960 and 1961 the total taxes levied on Latin American coffee by European Economic Community countries amounted to about $700 million, while supplier countries (in terms of the f.o.b. value of exports) only got $600 million. The rich countries that preach free trade apply stern protecrionist policies against the poor countries: they turn everything they touch - including the underdeveloped countries' own production - into gold for themselves."

I liked this passage from a book I'm reading.
"The people in the King's city of Kamesham thought that these highvalley folk lived like animals. But in truth these villagers lived pure human life. They needed each other to survive, and knew it. They had no conspiracies and no secrets, no ambitions and no feuds. They couldn't afford the luxury of treating any man or woman or child as expendable."

A quotation from a book on a pixel art background from the perspective of a person in prison looking over the prison walls toward a city with the sun starting to rise. The quotation says "In most of our discussions about these issues we talk about abstractions; we tend to use stereotypes and symbols. Offenders are faceless enemies who embody our worst fears. Victims - if we think about them at all - become planks in our campaigns, pawns in the judicial and political processes. We tend not to see victims or offenders as real people." - Howard Zehr, Doing Life: Reflections of Men and Women Serving Life Sentences
