My fourth font for the @cartoonist.coop Letterer Challenge 2026! This prompt was "Horror", as if that wasn't obvious! It has lots of alternate characters! You can download it here: chaseburns.itch.io/scrawling-da... #font #openfontlicense #lettererchallenge2026

an image displaying "Scrawling Darkly", a gritty comic book font.

there's a speech balloon that reads "Wanna hear how long I can scream? Aaaaaiiiiiiiieeeeeeee!!! Hold on, let me try that again..."

Made for the Cartoonists United Letterer Challenge 2026

another image displaying "Scrawling Darkly", a gritty comic book font.

Uses opentype ligatures to switch up side-by-side duplicate characters. Vowels have 4 alternates! Alts can also be picked manually, for variety.

Displaying this feature is a speech balloon that reads "Thiiisss iiisss hooow slowwlllyy I caaaaan taaallkk" and 4 "urgh!"s with different alternate letters.

Good for sound effects (Maybe even better than for dialogue…). Demonstrating this are stylized sound effects that reads "Splat", "Aaaiiieeee!!!", and "drip drip".

another image displaying "Scrawling Darkly", a gritty comic book font. this one displays all of the characters included in the font, with many alternates.

Beyblade X volume 6! Here's some SFX I lettered for it that I think are neat. I don't have the final Japanese pages on hand so no comparisons this time.

a better world with better file pipelines for manga is possible! No good reason any of this should come flat from the publisher unless it was drawn with pen and paper. (Amazing work though!!!)

(forgot the other part) the ideal would be either a separate set of bitmapped tiffs with all the text layers turned off, or all the original files from the artist. I've done both, both are great. Retouch is a 2-4x increase in work time. It would make production way more efficient.

Reminder!! Bluesky has a pronoun labeler you should really use! Only those who subscribe to this will see it so you should do that. Don't worry, that's all it does. Instructions are in the bio/first post.
