Interested in a PhD in Theoretical evolutionary ecology / statistics? A position is open (again) in my lab. "Theoretical and statistical modeling of eco-evolutionary feedback loops from abundance-phenotype time series" Details and application: emploi.cnrs.fr/Offres/Docto...
Illustration on an eco-evo feedback loop. The environment drives how selection affects individuals, while individual genotypes and phenotypes affect the environment (typically, by modifying the population density).

SU: It's a set of character qualities, habits of mind, dispositions that enable you to live in the world with joy and wonder and awe and responsibility. If we lose sight of that, then of course people are going to have this idea that math is just calculation, and I don't want people to think of math that way, right? Math is more than that. Math is understanding. That's the whole reason anybody's ever been involved in the mathematical pursuits, to try to deeply understand things, and we can't cede that to AI.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

Rutherford's puzzle about 'Napoleon's theorem' was published in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴' 𝐷𝑖𝑎𝑟𝑦: 𝑜𝑟 𝑊𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑛'𝑠 𝐴𝑙𝑎𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑐𝑘. Interestingly, this woman's magazine was an important forum for math problems before more 'serious' math journals appeared in the UK in 1830.

At the same time I'm also extremely worried that the large AI companies can evidently outthink us in terms of maths ideas given money. Remains to be seen whether big impacts will be felt in EEB, but I think that's more because the companies at present don't care about EEB (and other applications).

If you're publishing massive unreadable AI-generated proofs and need to convince the world they're not just slop, you need to formalize them using Lean. Thus formalization paves the way for AI. 😒

Precisely my fear for eco-evo. People often delude themselves into thinking they understand a theoretical result in eco-evo without delving into the maths because they understand the statement and think conceptual intuition is enough. Theorists are forced to do HW, AI tools encourage sidestepping it

tried to explain to someone why openai's actions are so serious. not to be dramatic but we are in hell and all the demons are here
there are tons of issues here. almost impossible to convey how bad things are. in no particular order:

this research breakthrough was a consequence of dumping tons of money into the ai companies. if the future of the field means being entangled with openai et al. and extreme expenses that is going to upend mathematics in a much bigger way than ability to prove new things will. this hasn’t been a focal point of discussion yet but it looks to be at the center of mathematics going forward imo.

possibly for legal reasons, the statement stops short of accusing openai of stealing their in progress work. as in literally snaking their documents off the cloud and using them to try to undercut researchers. but it’s very clear that that is what the author believes happened

openai straight up threatened the mathematician in question. in a colloquial sense they’re engaging in extortion. apparently this is so routine for them that they didn’t even stop to consider that they can’t threaten an academic’s career (or they assumed the mathematician would understand there will be no academic careers in the future)

openai is straight up lying about their research methods. there are various ways that their announcements have had the potential to be misleading (for example when you see “we spent $2000 to compute these proofs” ask how much they spent on attempts that didn’t work). but what they’re saying may generally just not be true even in a literal sense
