I dug around for an address to notify the publisher that they were being used to lend credibility towards a scam and settled on the support address for the website. It’s after hours in the UK, so I don’t imagine I’ll hear back until tomorrow, if at all.

Naturally, I looked up the publisher name and discovered that it also existed and was a well-established UK publisher. The address the email came from seemed to be coming from the official site. Had they been spoofed? No, they’d just changed a letter, as I noticed when I C&Ped the address as text.

The email also said "You have 15 books and one follower. That tells me you built a body of work.” I couldn’t figure out where the AI got that information. But, loud and proud at the end of the email, it reads: Philip Contos Executive Editorial Leader Laurence King Publishing Ltd

A quick search on The Duck revealed that an author of that name did exist, and she had indeed written a book by that name. The book was published in 1952. The author died in 1995. Every detail about the book and the author contained in the email, could be found in its Goodreads entry.

It was allegedly from a Philip Contos. It waxed rhapsodic as only AI written letters can about my book A Hive of Suspects and how it struck him, how the plot intrigued him, and even had details about the book itself. The problem? My name is not Sheila Pim, and I did not write a book by that name.

An email landed in two of my inboxes this morning (I didn’t notice until about 20 minutes ago). Both emails are one I use for freelance writing purposes — one to my own domain and the other a Gmail address. The subject was "Sheila Pim, an invitation to discuss your work.”

I didn’t mean that entirely seriously. My position is that we should keep tinkering with the Constitution to a minimum unless truly necessary. I think the limits on who qualifies to become president are fine as they are. There are plenty of born Americans who are capable of doing a good job.

Seriously, though, the mainstream producers of books, movies, music &c. have begun to view these things as INVESTMENTS. And not as in investing in new talent, but literally “What’s the ROI for this? Will this produce shareholder value?” That’s why they play it safe and don’t take risks anymore.
