On the plus side, I’m not wading through DragonCon crowds right now. On the downside… (Ridiculously detailed information in the ALT tag.)
This is the waiting room of a Tires Plus location about a mile from Lindbergh Station. The parking deck at the station was full, so I pulled over to figure out a plan B, and ran over a curb on the way to my backup plan’s station. My front passenger tire was destroyed, so after putting on the spare (with the help of a chivalrous passerby) I looked up the nearest tire place and here I am.

It’s not bad as automotive repair waiting rooms go. There is coffee and bottled water and the volume on the TV set playing a college football game (North Texas v. Indiana) is low enough to ignore.

Visual details: a corner of a room with white walls and some promotional signage extolling how much the company cares about its customers and the environment. There is a gray cabinet jammed in the corner with a glass-fronted mini fridge next to it. A burgundy Keurig is on top of the cabinet, along with foam cups in two sizes, a large box of coffee pods labeled CLASSIC COFFEE VARIETY PACK, coffee stirrers, Sugar in the Raw, and Coffee Mate in tiny, sealed cups. On top of the mini fridge full of water bottles, a large yellow sign advertises promotional financing in the form of a company credit card. The floor looks to be vinyl mimicking gray hardwood planks.

And as I write this, I’ve just been notified that they’re working on the final inspection. Whoo-hoo!

100,000 seconds is a little over one day.

1,000,000 seconds is a little over eleven days.

10,000,000 seconds is a little over four months.

100,000,000 seconds is a little over three years.

1,000,000,000 seconds is a little over thirty years.

10,000,000,000 seconds is a little over three centuries.

100,000,000,000 seconds is over three millenia.

1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) seconds
is over thirty thousand years.

Keep that in mind when trying to hold in your head
how much these numbers really are.

#OneGoodThing that happened today is that I finally saw The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh in person. I could have stared at it for ages, tracing the brushstrokes with my gaze, but I was with other people and there was so much more museum to look at.
A picture of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night in its frame from a slightly off-center angle because I couldn’t get the front-and-center spot.

We didn’t expect the train to get to the airport so soon, nor did we realize just how speedy security would be with the TSA Precheck. Which means we’ve got over two hours to fill before boarding. I guess I’ll scribble in my travel diary for a bit. #TommyInVegas

Step Four: Serve. (Not shown: devour and conclude that olive oil is tastier and better-looking.)
Here are the drumsticks after cooking. Olive left, soybean right. I know which one I’m using from here on in. Now I have to figure out what to do with the enormous bottle of soybean oil I got from Aldi.

#OneGoodThing that happened today was that I successfully performed a GRAND CULINARY EXPERIMENT! I did a taste test between air-fried chicken coated in olive oil and coated in soybean oil. Step One: Coat chicken with oil, salt, and pepper. The olive is on the left and the soybean on the right.
You are looking at two different bowls, one black and octagonal, the other round and white. In each bowl is a raw chicken drumstick, lightly covered in oil with a sprinkling of salt and pepper. The one on the left (black octagonal) is coated in olive oil; the right one is covered in soybean oil, which is basically what people mean when they say vegetable oil.

#OneGoodThing that happened today was that I returned my balcony to its former glory. (More details in alt-text.)
This is my balcony. It is bordered by a low, beige-painted wall that I’m pretty much stuck with because I live in a condominium. The floor is mostly exposed concrete with the tattered remnants of a paint job in greenish blue, which was already falling apart when I moved in twenty years ago. Against one wall is a set of two off-white plastic chairs with a small matching table between them. Against another are two planters with freshly-combed dirt in them.

To truly appreciate this picture, you have to understand what it looked beforehand. The concrete floor was buried under heaps of leaves that had been sitting there so long that the bottom layer had decomposed to dirt. The planters had previously been filled with leaves, weeds, and the corpse of a tomato plant.

It’s not spotless, but it’s definitely much better than it was.

#OneGoodThing that happened yesterday was that I got out of the house to see this fine film.
Panel of experts at the screening of the documentary Benjamin Smoke at the Plaza Theater. The curtains over the screen are closed and there is a projection on it that reads:

CABBAGETOWN INITIATIVE

BENJAMIN
SMOKE
#PLAZAATLANTA

The film is a documentary about the late Robert Dickerson, known as Benjamin, the frontman of the band Smoke. People refer to him as Benjamin Smoke, as if Smoke was his surname, but nobody called him that when he was still alive. Why, no, that doesn’t bother me or anything.

Yesterday was not the best of days, but #OneGoodThing that did happen is that I got a replacement for my broken lamp without going to Target. (Plus, it’s a really cute lamp.)

Say hello to #TommyTheBear. I’ve had him since I was a toddler. He’s been my traveling companion for many a trip, and I took him with me on a midweek jaunt to a casino resort in North Carolina. Things didn’t go quite as planned, though… 🧵(1)
This is a picture of Tommy the Bear. He has an off-white face and body with black arms, legs, and ears. His arms are hard to see because he’s wearing a jaunty orange felt jacket fastened with a single gray button. (My mother custom-made it for him.) His eyes are orange and he has a little red dot of a nose and no visible mouth. He’s seated on the corner of a dark brown woodgrain desk against two walls painted in an off-white color that’s not too far off from his face.

If you're new here and don't know that the #10kflowers Project is, here's the rundown.
The Ten Thousand Flowers Project

The Ten Thousand Flowers Project started in the year 2011.
I'd obtained some fine-point markers for an art project, then found I couldn't use them because the points weren't fine enough. I decided to draw flowers on index cards and give them away to people, because I wanted a way to be generous with the world, given that being generous with money wasn't an option.

Why ten thousand? Short answer--hypomania. Longer answer--I knew when I got it in my head that I wanted to give flowers away, I would need some kind of finish line to motivate me. I tried on different numbers for size, and when I did ten thousand, it felt right.

Did I mention, was hypomanic at the time? The fact that I was cranking out flowers at the rate of ten a day is a big hint that I was. Then the Wheel of Bipolar turned and put me back into depression and I was lucky to get one a day done. I'm up to two each session now, and i'm trying to be a little better about drawing and posting these from here on in.

If you would like one of these, simply send your mailing address to free@10kflowers.com and I'll get one in the mail.for you. I will not use your address for any other purpose than sending you your flower. You can also follow the #10kflowers hashtag to see my progress.

He leans forward and meets my mouth with his. He may be the best kisser I’ve ever touched lips with—he starts gently, almost delicately, then intensifies in just the right way. I twine my arms about his neck and pull him more firmly to me.
I hear the whir of miniature propeller blades and feel a brush of wind against my skin. Oh, shit…
“Good people,” a synthetic voice says. “Intimate contact is prohibited in the park. Please refrain or relocate.”
Ethan lets me go and looks at the bot, a small flying saucer held up by three propellers.
“It was just a kiss!” he protests. “We still have our clothes on.”
“Intimate contact and excessive public displays of affection are not permitted in the park,” the bot replies implacably.
I get out of Ethan’s lap and sit down next to him. I don’t want to find out what worse trouble will look like.
“Right.” He turns to me. “Can I interest you in some private displays of affection?”
“This is a public park,” the bot says.
“I’m not talking to you. We’re no longer displaying our affections publicly. Don’t you have somebody else to bother, or is there something else you have to say?”
The bot hovers a moment before saying, “Good day, good people” and flying off.
Ethan turns back to me. “So, as I was saying...”

post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't nirvana, soundgarden, pearl jam, or alice in chains.
This is the cover of the eponymous 1991 album Rain Tree Crow. It was functionally a reunion of the band Japan, having the lineup of the final two albums by them, but a vastly different sound.

The cover is a sepia-toned photograph of a desert scene, with rocks and small cacti on the ground and power lines to either side. Some of the stones seem to have been arranged into a path leading into a circle. The sky is clouded, with sharp diagonal lighter streaks like shafts of sunlight slashing over it.

In the upper right part of the cover, the name of the album (RAIN TREE CROW) is visible in narrow capitals in almost-white with slight shadowing, with one word per line. Interspersed between the words are the names of the members (David Sylvian, Steve Jansen, Richard Barbieri, and Mick Karn) in smaller letters that are all caps. It's a beautiful and mysterious scene.

This is a simple drawing of a vine rising up from the grass in a sort of sine wave that isn’t held up by anything. On the vine are nine blossoms showing five petals each, alternating between red and blue, along with green leaves along the vine as well. This is the one I'm working on right now. (I have to make a new batch of filling before I can get started.) They're more of a pastry than a cookie, and they make a delicious breakfast!
Kolacky
(Dough from 1977 Southern Living Magazine)

4 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup shortening
1 package active dry yeast
2 Tablespoons warm water
3 egg yolks
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine flour, salt, butter, and shortening until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.

Dissolve yeast in the warm water and set aside.

Blend sour cream, egg yolks, and vanilla together and then add the dissolved yeast.

Pour the sour cream, egg, vanilla, yeast all at once into the flour mixture and mix thoroughly. The result should be a stiff but not overly sticky dough.

Pat the dough into a disc about the size of a dinner plate, cover well with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 6 hours and up to 24 hours. When ready to form pastries, divide dough into 5 or 6 wedges. Work with one section at a time and keep the rest refrigerated.

Lightly flour a pastry board/cloth, and sprinkle very lightly with sifted powdered sugar. Form the dough piece into a square using your hands, and then roll out the dough with a rolling pin into the closest thing to a square that you can form. The dough should be thin, but not so thin you can’t handle it to fold over the filling.

Cut the dough into squares about 2-3 inches across, put a small spoonful of filling in the center, fold the dough over the filling, pinch the ends to seal and put seam side down on an ungreased, non-stick surface cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes at 375 or until lightly browned. Remove from baking pan, put on wire racks to cool, and immediately sprinkle the tops of the pastries with sifted powdered sugar.

Filling: Cook 8-12 ounces of dried apricots with just enough water to barely cover until liquid is absorbed and fruit is very tender (30-45 minutes). Add sugar to taste and then either puree in a Foley food mill, a blender, or a food processor. Chill before use.
