Finally watched The Third Man (1949). Great performances all around in this little noir set in the aftermath of WWII. There is a chase scene that takes place in this labyrinthine sewer system that looks absolutely splendid in black-and-white. Worth the price of admission alone. #filmsky #scriptsky

Oh man, gonna be living in the cinema in October. Primetime, Whalefall, Digger, Verity, Street Fighter, Forgotten Island, The Social Reckoning, Other Mommy, Klara and the Sun, Wildwood, The Fox (by Causeway Films - one of my favourite Aussie studios), and a special screening of The Devils. #filmsky

Just saw Coyote Versus ACME in the cinema and, just, wow. What an absolute crime against art it would have been for it to have never seen the light of day. It is superb. Gave me the same awe I had watching Who Framed Roger Rabbit. See it on a big cinema screen - it rocks. #filmsky #scriptsky

Resident Evil is very fun and so inventive. I haven't loved a gory, mutation horror-comedy this much since Slither. See this on the biggest screen you can! Also: the soundtrack is a pulsating, dread-filled banger that I'll definitely have on repeat. I rate it 5/5 Tentacles! #filmsky #scriptsky

If you get a chance to see the Australian 60 Minutes episode about this, I highly recommend it. So many lucky coincidences that happened (including a trauma expert who happened to be at the beach that day) to get this incredible outcome.

Oh man, Tim Curry. One of the best presences in the world of film. Any project would always be elevated by him (Cardinal Richelieu in Three Musketeers is still my most-quoted fave) I love how he would randomly appear in things. Tim Curry on a Russian sub in Hunt for Red October? No worries! Vale x

Dolly Parton rose from poverty to stardom. She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school; she built hospitals & bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.
“In Dallas for the premier of '9 to 5', I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, "Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her." We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

The Secret Agent Difficult to describe this film, as it wouldn't adequately convey the fine details and richness of depiction of 1970s Brazil that has been achieved here. It's a beautiful and heartbreaking film and Wagner Moura absolutely deserved to be in the Oscar race for his role. #filmsky

There Will Come Soft Rains - by Ray Bradbury. Absolute stomper of a short story about a smart house continuing its rituals long after the humans have gone. Dark. And poignant. And Beautiful. And very of our era. Parts of this chilled me to the core. I highly recommend it. #Bradbury #sciencefiction

Just got out of Studio Ghibli’s adaptation of the Odyssey. So many women on the boat! It was great the way they sang back to the sirens, making it a stalemate. The boat was so gorgeous: all rivets and sweeping sails, and how cool was that horse: reimagined as an internally spacious dragon! 5 stars.

This is pretty well known, but the Australian flag Sam Neill wore on his uniform in Event Horizon was designed at his request to show the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal flag, because he hoped in the future this is how it would actually look. A proper fucken ally in every way, this bloke.
Sam Neill on profile in EVENT HORIZON, with a patch on his jacket that shows the Australian flag but with the Union Jack replaced with the Aboriginal flag, because fuck colonialism and Sam knew that this always was, always will be, Aboriginal land

Sam Neill spent some of his lockdown posting wholesome chats and duck-cuddling content from his home in New Zealand. These meant a lot to me during a pretty dark time. This drawing was inspired by one of his posts. Thanks for everything, Sam. Your amazing films and your humanity. Rest in peace.
A 2020 illustration of one of Sam Neill's lockdown quotes. It is drawn in the style of Animal Crossing, which was also a big warm hug at the time.

Le Guin on the idea that there is a secret to getting good at writing.
I will dispose of the first myth as quickly as possible. The “secret” is skill. If you haven’t learned how to do something, the people who have may seem to be magicians, possessors of mysterious secrets. In a fairly simple art, such as making pie crust, there are certain teachable “secrets” of method that lead almost infallibly to good results; but in any complex art, such as housekeeping, piano-playing, clothes-making, or story-writing, there are so many techniques, skills, choices of method, so many variables, so many “secrets,” some teachable and some not, that you can learn them only by methodical, repeated, long-continued practice — in other words, by work.

A thing I love about writing is the PROCESS OF WRITING because I can sort out & note down all the ideas, of course. But it is process that creates narrative. Often I don't know how I am going to make a plot point work until, as I'm writing, a solution slides onto the page. Boom! It's magic.
