So much of the "quit wasting time and money on humanities programs" comes from dudes with humanities degrees from the Ivies. They get to have a broad, liberal, meaningful education, but it's narrow, lifeless career prep for the rest of y'all.

Major kudos to MIT, who just put out a report about AI on their campus that lucidly explains the threat posed by AI to cognition and the student experience, while at the same time prioritizes learning, students, and the value of education. 1/x aiandeducation.mit.edu/report/

Reading this as one of my many tasks today. Very downcast to see all those universities founded in the 1960s to foster the whole person, communities of hope and the conditions of freedom... ripped apart and trashed just a couple of generations later. For no good reason.

Stephen Lewis spoke eloquently here when he received an honorary degree from my university. And when I happened to recognize him in London, and overheard him trying to figure out how to get to Victoria Station, I got the chance to give him directions and to tell him how much I admired his work.

"Our subjects need to be allowed to be their subjects, or else their value will fail." Useful reminder of what's happening to our jobs and disciplines.
Every worker who has lost their job in academia due to the spurious metrics and financial troubles that have become the norm is a victim of constructive dismissal. More and more we are asked to take our energy away from what we were primarily hired to do to work more and more on proving our financial value. The power behind this is real, and opposing it and defending our colleagues from the worst consequences requires rigorous strategy as well as action. However, we should also defend our rightful place in society as centres of tradition and learning, and demand recognition as worthy in our own right.
