One of the key lessons from Dutch cycling history is cities didn't start with protected lanes. They began by making streets safer, calmer and more inviting; with lower speeds, parking restrictions, traffic filters and reduced through-traffic to create an environment in which cycling could flourish.🧵
A cycling priority street in the Netherlands where drivers are guests and cyclists are the main users.

@alexbozikovic.bsky.social has written what is now my favourite succinct analysis of why Alto is such a vital national project.
The value of cities is not merely that they concentrate people and transactions. It is that they create a shared
world: places where strangers encounter one another, where ideas circulate, and where commerce emerges from proximity and
exchange. Even now, the economic power of cities is inseparable from their social and cultural life. Yet this is poorly understood by many
governments. Alto promises to remedy that, while
protecting Canada against a future in which high oil
prices and climate politics make roads and airports much less accessible. If done right - with well-located downtown terminal stations
- Alto would remake the cultural and economic
geography of Canada.

The carrot approach to speed cameras: Speed-detecting traffic signals that reward drivers for obeying the speed limit. If a driver is speeding towards the light, it will turn red. If the driver is approaching at a safe speed, it will turn green. These signals reduce speeding and injury crashes.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

Talked to Replit CEO Amjad Masad about how he dealt with the feeling that "everything I worked for is kind of moot" following the rapid improvement of coding tools www.platformer.news/replit-amjad...
Now, in 2025, when we started getting Opus and the new Claude models, I was like, okay, I need to be honest with myself. My entire life mission around teaching people coding is changing. You don't need to code anymore. And I started building things without looking at the code — this was before Karpathy even coined “vibe coding.” So I was on TBPN, and I said it. It was actually kind of a painful moment, because here you are, you dedicated your life — I've been working on making coding easier for literally 15 years, most of my adult life — and I'm saying everything that I worked toward is kind of moot, and the way forward is that we make programming so easy that anyone could do it.
