Palace have limited their managerial options by spending three years recruiting very specifically for a 3-4-2-1. There aren't many good coaches who use that system. There are also several players who I'd be uncomfortable having in a back four.

This reminds me actually, the amount of posts I've seen recently from fans saying "all the players say [something negative]" doesn't speak to a particularly great culture. I've not known a Palace squad and their wider circle to leak quite as much as this lot do.

I hope it works because, ultimately, I fear the alternative is Sean Dyche. And I may renege on my plan to attend more games if he's anywhere near my football club. Sage also isn't the only problem but he's certainly a red flag contributing to my feeling that this isn't going to be a good season.

Being critical of players in public is great when you're winning and you have banked some credit (OG is a good example). Criticising half a dozen players, leaving new signings out of the squad entirely, etc etc, can very easily ostracise you and undermine your leadership bsky.app/profile/matt...

I like to step back and see the bigger picture, but the bigger picture I see is mish-mash recruitment, a well-meaning but inexperienced manager making naïve decisions, and a team needing to score three goals a game just to have a chance. Sprinkle in individual headlosses and... it's not great.

one takeaway i had from working in digital media in the 2010s was that it's pretty bad for your brain and your understanding of your career/the world when your industry becomes the main subject of twitter and twitter becomes the main context for your industry. also bad for the industry overall

The things I am expecting of Palace today, and they're very sensible expectations, are probably beyond their capability. There's a hell of a lot to dissect and blame to go in various places, but ultimately whatever strategy was in place in May was either bad or has failed. Neither is good.
