Earlier Gorcenski used the analogy of "leaving a pot on a lit burner unwatched" for what OpenAI has done. And sure, that's bad. But also, if the unwatched pot hops down from the stove, joins with the rest of the cookware, and loots your bank account, you've got problems beyond simple negligence.

@fasterthanli.me not quite what you were asking for, but I've seen languages (or, at least one) where relations are part of the IF statement and are not expressions at all in and of themselves This one is 0basicx on CYBIS/PLATO
Help text from PLATO

Part of the text reads:

"Valid forms for an IF statement are:

100 IF exp1 relation exp2 THEN line"

I feel like there's not much discussion about IBM 1401 FORTRAN IV. For IBM 1401 FORTRAN II there's a demo at the CHM, a full decompile, etc. etc. For IBM 1401 FORTRAN IV, the Internet has: The manual. The tape.

Any experts on pre-1970 #FORTRAN around? The below two lines (there's stuff in between) are in IBM's SSP. It looks like it should be an out-of-bounds error, and in fact VS FORTRAN II refuses to compile it. So....??? DIMENSION XCOF(1),COF(1),ROOTR(1),ROOTI(1) 140 COF(2)=COF(2)+ALPHA*COF(1)

How would demos of CD-ROM DOS games have been distributed? I vaguely remember playing Peter Pan: A Story Painting Adventure on DOS as a kid. Looking it up, it seems like it came on CD-ROM. But there was also a demo of it, I wonder how that demo... was distributed? @dosnostalgic.bsky.social

Just made yet another personal project where I just used plain DOM manipulation. It's starting to get tedious. But then I'd have to look at frameworks and frameworks with their build processes always feel like overkill.

Earlier this week I made a video showing how to use IBM's own 1401 emulator (a modified version) in Hercules. I still have some research to do on things like using tapes, the card punch, and sense switches. Also, documentation on the differences between the modified versions we have.

I wonder if I found a bug in IBM VM/370's START command. The below code should look at the PARM, then exit successfully. But when LOADed then STARTed, it crashes. START * works fine though, as though START doesn't give valid PARM

Some humor in Evergreen State College's student newspaper (from 1996: collections.evergreen.edu/s/archives/i...) I've been seeking out information about the BASIC that ran on "Hewpie," it seems to be custom, and there's a simulator of it on CYBIS
Computer Services
June, 1972
Despite their late start, Evergreen greeted the technological age with open arms by installing their only computer "Hewpie". According to experts it primarily used for computer games, although DOOM wasn't installed until quite a few years later.

Well, this was confusing. Error about missing "dyn", and I thought it was there. Until I tried retyping it. VS Code was suggesting it was implied.
Screenshot of a portion of Rust, in VS Code. Two lines have Box<dyn std::error:Error>>. The first line has the word "dyn" in grey, the second has the word "dyn" in blue. The first line has error squiggles under std::error::Error

PLATO/CYBIS had a BASIC simulator, but I'm not sure... which BASIC it's simulating. This USING command seems distinctive. It also supports matrix operations.
Screenshot of PLATO terminal BASIC help, with the following explanation of the USING command:

        using
        using...of

The "using" statement is used to execute the text
of a different line number in place of the current line.

        100 print "Hi, Matey"
120 if a[b[33×z9- not sqr(a[1])],3] then print "wrong"
        130 using 100
        140 using 120
        150 using x+5 of 100,100,120

When program execution reaches line 130, the text
of the referenced line (100) will be executed (print
        "Hi, Matey").
The "using" statement is really handy to use in
situations where you want to execute an instruction
more than once in a program and that instruction is
very long or complex, such as the one in line 120.
Line 140 will be executed as if it were "if a[b[33×...
        etc.".
As shown in line 150, the conditional form may be
        used with the "using" statement.

        NEXT for another statement
        BACK for more options
SHIFT BACK to return to the simulator

Firing the BLS Commissioner — the wonk in charge of the statisticians who track economic reality — is an authoritarian four alarm fire. It will also backfire: You can't bend economic reality, but you can break the trust of markets. And biased data yields worse policy.

What is "IMAP-mailbox-name" and why is it listed as an encoding? Also it's weird seeing CESU-8 as an encoding one can choose.
Windows Terminal is open, with the new Microsoft Edit. A "Convert to encoding" box is open, with a long list of encodings. There are encodings like "UTF-8", "UTF-16BE,version=1", "UTF-7", "SCSU", "BOCU-1", and "CESU-8". "IMAP-mailbox-name" is in the list and hilighted.
