On October 7, 1982, the Miami Herald reported that 25-year-old Miami pharmacist Elvis Cruz had set an ultralight flying record by piloting his aircraft from Paradise Island in the Bahamas to Government Cut in Miami. The flight took just over 5 hours.
25-year-old Miamian sets soaring record

Elvis Cruz flies ultralight from Bahamas to Miami.
Flying lower and slower than some birds, a Miami pharmacist skimmed solo over 187 miles of ocean Tuesday in a frail little craft more like a kite than an airplane.
When he set his 220-pound aircraft down in Government Cut, Elvis Cruz claimed a new world's record for long-distance flying in an "ultralight."
His 187-mile flight from Paradise Island in the Bahamas was more than six times farther than the old record, 30.2 miles, set two months ago, according to aviation officials.
Cruz, 25, wiry and well-tanned, had never even flown an ultralight until four months ago, when he bought one for $5,706.
In fact he'd never flown anything. He's not a licensed pilot — ultralight flyers don't have to be.
What Cruz lacks in experience, he makes up for in grit, said Everett Langworthy, executive vice president of the National Aeronautics Association, an aviation organization that supervised the flight and certified the new world's record.
"It was a very daring achievement," Langworthy said. "The winds were constantly shifting on him. He was basically flying a kite with a tiny engine on it. It's not everybody who would do that."
Cruz's assessment of the flight: "Dull."
"It wasn't very exciting," he said. "All I was doing was concentrating on flying in a straight line so I wouldn't waste fuel." His biggest worry was running out of gasoline.
He said he had to check his compass, the only instrument on the ultralight, "every two seconds" to keep a straight course.
A single-engine Cessna 172 supplied by South Florida Aviation Inc., a charter company, circled in front of Cruz, marking the course he was to follow.
After taking off from Paradise Island at 9:36 a.m. with 15½ gallons of fuel, Cruz headed toward Bimini. His altitude ranged from a mere five feet to 15 feet. Cruz said he buzzed along at a low altitude to pick up tailwinds.
"There was nothing the plane could have done if Elvis had gone down," said Langworthy. The Cessna chase plane couldn't land in the water.
"He would have been stuck out there until somebody came to help."

Fuel-efficient the flight was. Fast it wasn't.
The two-cycle, 20-horsepower engine consumed so little gasoline that some was left in the tank when Cruz landed, five hours and two minutes after taking off. The tiny engine pushed the ultralight along at an average of only 37 miles per hour.
Extra fuel stored in special tanks enabled Cruz to remain aloft so long. Most ultralights hold only three gallons of gasoline, but Cruz's holds extra fuel in the fiberglass pontoons. A pump, operated with a hand crank, forces fuel up into a tank mounted between the wings. Then the fuel flows into the engine by gravity.
"I had to keep an eye on the tank [between the wings] to make sure it didn't run out," he said.
The ultralight, whose frame of aluminum tubing is reinforced by taut wires, has wings that are made of rainbow-colored Dacron sailcloth. The pilot sits in a cloth sling that dangles beneath the wings and steadies himself by placing his feet against a crossbar.
He controls the plane by pulling and pushing on a steering yoke and by shifting his weight in the sling.
Before leaving on the long-distance flight, Cruz broke another ultralight record, flying 80 miles back and forth between two points — more than twice as far as the previous record for "close

Hoo, boy. Florida's 1st DCA just ordered the Hope Florida grand jury presentment to be expunged. Judge Lance E. Neff, who previously worked for the DeSantis administration for years and was appointed to the court just this year by DeSantis wrote the opinion. The entire opinion is threaded.
Because the Presentment exceeded the grand jury's authority, and because its disclosure violated section 905.28—each an independent ground for full expungement—we reverse the order's denial of full relief and remand with directions to expunge the Presentment in its entirety. We also reverse the Notification Orders.
