October 15, 1979: The Miami News reports that after a 14-year absence, beer is once again being sold to Dolfans at the OB...for $1 a cup.
Dolfans line up for beer after a 14-year dry spell

So what if you had to walk all the way from the Orange Bowl's upper deck to the lower deck to buy a beer? Or if you had to wait in long lines, then shell out a buck for a cup of brew?
It made no difference to Miami Dolphin fans who guzzled 16,000, 12-ounce cups of Budweiser in a collective toast to beer in the Orange Bowl Sunday.
While yesterday's game against the Buffalo Bills marked the first time in the Dolphins' 14 years that beer was sold at a home game, Dolfans are, of course, not strangers to the cold sudsy stuff.
"This is long overdue," said Tim Drake, of Boynton Beach, as he downed beer number four. "Football and beer naturally go together. I think the fans deserve it."
Bob Mann, 23, complained that $1 a cup was "a little high." But that didn't stop him from downing 10 cups. "It's cold and on tap," he said. "I guess if I wanted a sale I'd go to 7-Eleven."
"It's about time," said Bill Wexelbaum, as he meandered a cardboard tray with seven beers and a foot-long hot dog through the halftime crowd. "It's not expensive. What do you expect with inflation?"
"I don't think any football or baseball stadium should be without beer," said Marty Maurer, a visitor from Union, N.J., where he sells gravestones. "I'm especially glad they chose Bud, it's my brand."
Except for a few complaints about the long walks to the concession stands, the price, and — in one instance — "too much foam," beer drinkers seemed pleased.
Miami police seemed happy, too. They said there were no reports of beer-born problems.
But not everything was bliss. Besides the Bills, who lost 17-7, and the soft-drink vendors, who said beer hurt their business, there was another not-so-cheerful person: Dolphins' owner Joe Robbie.
"I'm happy that people are finally getting their thirsts quenched at the Orange Bowl," Robbie said. But, in the same breath, he said he was unhappy with the beer agreement which took two years to work out with the Miami City ment, which calls for him to pay $330,000 for the dispensing equipment. The agreement also calls for the city to make $500,000 worth of improvements to the stadium by next July.
The city gets 25 per cent of gross sales revenues from the beer while the new equipment is being installed and 35 per cent after it's all in place.
Robbie also blasted Miami City Commissioner Rose Gordon, who had voted against several beer proposals before backing the brew recently. Gordon's running for mayor now, and Robbie was angry because several persons were distributing her campaign material outside the stadium.
Jack Chappell, a supervisor for Budweiser, said his company brought in 120 15½-gallon kegs and emptied "between 75 and 80 per cent of them." That translates into 1,500 gallons, or 16,000 cups of beer chugged down by the 45,000 fans who showed up for the game.
That is just the tip of the beer can, Chappell said. Yesterday's beer was sold at six locations on the lower deck of the stadium. In two weeks, when the Dolphins meet the Green Bay Packers, beer stands will scattered all over the stadium, and sales will be much higher, Chappell predicted.
Chappell scoffed at complaints about the price. "A dollar is more than fair," he said. "Most bars now are getting between 80 cents to $1 a cup. Hey, the Cokes are selling for 65 cents each."
Hot dog vendors did good business next to the beer stands, but soft-drink sellers said their business was down. "Between the beer and the rain I guess business is down about 10 per cent," said Milton Lyles, who has been hawking Pepsi at the Orange Bowl three years.
Instead of the usual "Get your Pepsis here," line, Lyles had to come up with a new sales pitch. It went like this:
"Get your substitute for beer. Ice-cold Pepsi here."

It was 1955 and the Miami Herald editorial page noted that solar power was beginning to emerge as a viable source of energy and they were confidant that there would be "far more improvements in these fields in our lifetime." [Miami Herald - October 13, 1955]
Man Finally Gets Power From The Sun
MAN HAS KNOWN since the earliest days that the sun, the winds, and the tides were inexhaustible sources of power if they could ever be harnessed for practical use.
Some crude steps were taken long ago to use the sun's energy in heating water and homes, but it remained for the Bell Telephone Laboratories to harness it directly to provide power for a rural telephone circuit near Americus, Ga.
The power unit is a solar battery consisting of 432 discs of silicon treated with boron, arsenic and other elements and housed in a small box fastened to the top of a telephone pole. It produces enough current to run a rural phone circuit and to store the surplus in a storage battery for use during the hours of darkness.
It's a small step, to be sure, toward the goal of making the sun do more and more of man's work. But this development clearly means we shall see far more improvements in these fields in our lifetime.
They have a way of coming along fast once the initial "break-through" is made.

Here’s how trial balloons work. You throw out an extreme idea, and get it circulating in the information sphere by your propagandists and by your horrified opponents. What matters is that the idea attains the status of something that can be seriously considered, something that could be possible, if not now, then in the future. This is how you bring new values, worldviews, and practices based on violence and hatred into being in individuals and institutions. The reaction to such ideas is how you separate the loyalists and those with needed qualities of lawlessness from the cautious and the traditionalists.

World War II caused the Miami PD to suffer a critical shortage of radio dispatchers as employees enlisted or were drafted to fight the war. [Miami Daily News - October 12, 1942]
RADIO EMERGENCY — Miami police radio, nerve center of law-enforcement activity for the whole area, is faced with what may become a disasterous shortage of trained men. Already three veteran dispatchers have joined the military forces through draft or enlistment and four more have made application and are waiting to go. It takes the average man about a year to learn the intricacies of dispatching the well over a hundred radio equipped vehicles which operate from the station. There are now some feeble efforts being made to train some new men but if the dispatchers, now trying to get into the army or navy are accepted any time soon the police nerve center will be left with untrained operators.

October 11, 1977: The Miami News reported that a toothless, clawless 7-foot Kodiak bear named "Chow" was wandering loose in Hialeah after escaping from captivity.
Toothless bear leads posse of 30 on a chase near Hialeah
ROBERT MERKIN and DARY MATERA
Miami News Reporters
The keeper of a wandering 500-pound, 7-foot Kodiak bear led a "peaceful" hunting party of about 30 through three square miles of Hialeah Gardens pasture, lakes and wilderness today, hoping the toothless, declawed creature would answer its dinner bell.
The 18-month-old bear, Chow, has been missing from its cage since Saturday night or early Sunday. Police joined the search until last night.
The animal was last spotted about 8:30 this morning when 16-year-old Debbie Lao was horseback riding in a pasture area of the three-square-mile block.
Ms. Lao, who lives near the Valleydale Chicken Farm, said: "I couldn't believe what I saw. There was this big brown bear being chased by some cows."
She reported the sighting to searchers in the area. Ms. Lao saw the bear within a couple hundred yards of the chicken farm, she said. The bear's cage was about two miles from the farm.
Last night about 6, Willie Sanchez, also on horseback, encountered the bear near the Palmetto Expressway around NW 110th Street and called police. "He jumped some fences to get out of there," a neighbor said of Sanchez.
Within hours, three officers of the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission had traveled to Dade from West Palm Beach to join the hunt, aided by Hialeah and Hialeah Gardens officers.
Today, the search party grew to include five state wildlife officers, six civilians responsible for the bear, a Metro helicopter and two pilots, and about eight members of area media.
The bear's keeper, 27-year-old Lise deBedts, managed to convince the officers last night that the bear is harmless, largely defenseless and frightened. The officers agreed to conduct the hunt with tranquilizer guns instead of firearms. Ms. deBedts had been taking care of the bear for its owner, Bill Vergis, who keeps Chow and other wild animals as part of his movie animal business, Wild Animal Rentals.
Vergis has been tured. It was raised by people since it was a baby.
"I just hope the cops don't get too trigger happy. If anyone sees the bear, they're probably going to blast it, and we don't want that to happen.... He won't hurt anyone."
The hunt began in earnest after nightfall, the bear's most active period. Fresh tracks and a clump of bear fur where the animal had crossed some barbed wire convinced the hunting parties the bear was still in the area, but they didn't see him. Two experienced golden retrievers picked up, but later lost, active tracks of the bear three times.
Tom Kazo, the dog tracker, said the missing bear was "like somebody's neighborhood cat getting out."
The search temporarily ended at 1 a.m. but resumed again at 6 a.m. Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission officers in charge of the hunt feared curiosity seekers and armed hunters would converge on the area today. "People will be turned back," Sgt. Charles Dennis said.
"Some individual will bring a weapon and will attempt to shoot the bear and will probably get his rear end in a sling. The bear has no front teeth, but I wouldn't want to be gummed by a 500-pound bear.
"The bear poses a threat in that people in this area are not used to seeing a bear," Dennis said. "Stay away. You won't do anything but get in the way and get hurt."
Ms. deBedts urged that "if anybody sees the bear, don't approach him. He's harmless and shy of strangers. Call the (Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission). Please do not go near the bear. Please do not shoot the bear."
A falconer, Jack Kassewitz Jr., used his birds of prey today to try to spot the bear from the sky. Sometimes falcons track a bear out of curiosity, he said.

Wildlife officers hunt for clues
One hunter said he thought someone had tampered with Chow's cage and set the bear free. Before Dennis questioned Ms. deBedts about the bear's escape, he read her her constitutional rights and warned her that what she told him could be used as evidence if any charges we
