Patricia Kingori’s work on the “shadow scholars” of Africa is fascinating: “One Kenyan writer told me he applied for a job at an Ivy League university. When the rejection came through, he wrote back to say thanks, then added: “Just so you know, I’ve written all these papers for your institutions””

These two sentences have been on my mind: feeling stupid/dumbfounded when people assume altruistic motives, and more comfortable when people are suspicious. I’m wondering if this is a common pattern of feeling among saviourist global health, development, and humanitarian people.
“How stupid I feel & how unable to reply, when people start to tell me how generous & how altruistic & how fine it is of me to bring the boys to America for education,” Gajdusek reflected in his journal. “I feel far more comfortable with those who worried, ask me for my real motives & my real purpose.”

This is a long article. But it deserves to be read from the beginning to the very end. It is a global health (research) story. It deserves to be taught in global health classrooms. It deserves to be taught in the context of responsibility and reparation. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...
He believed that the kuru researchers had failed to address the problem their research was supposed to resolve.“The white men did not understand how sorcery is embedded in the system of life,” he said. The kuru epidemic had ended, but premature deaths continued; according to one count, one in eight children in the eastern highlands died before the age of five. Scientists had not offered a compelling enough theory of illness to replace the old ones. “America and the world can brag about the kuru studies and the many, many prizes, but what was the outcome of those studies?”Luwi asked.“They took a handful of us to America to be educated, but something could have been done for the community—they built no school, no clinic, no project for women to be who they can be.” He told me,“They took what they wanted and left us with an empty bowl.”

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/
