RUTA grew out of academic solidarity networks that emerged as a response to the shock of Feb. 24, 2022. Each year, it holds an international conference in Ukraine, centring Central, South-Eastern, and Eastern European, Baltic, Caucasus, Central and Northern Asian Studies in Global Conversation.

Once again, we will meet in Ukraine and hold our discussions on freedom in the society that is fighting for it. I can also share, ahead of the full CFP, that one of the sub-themes will be For Your Freedom and Ours!, exploring transnational liberation movements and their lasting intellectual heritage

The theme of our next RUTA conference is freedom—what it is and what it isn’t. Who are the theorists, dissidents, and artists from the RUTA regions of Europe's East, Baltic, Caucasus, Central & Northern Asia—and globally—whose work we build on when we think about what freedom and oppression entail?

As you prepare for the next edition of RUTA, we encourage you to use the time before the Call for Papers opens to develop trans-regional panels. Keep an eye on our social media and website for the official CFP launch. We look forward to exploring what freedom is, and what it isn’t, with you.

We are glad to announce that the theme of our next RUTA Conference (in early July 2027) is “Freedom: What It Is(n’t)” Even under the harshest conditions, the human desire for freedom persists. Yet freedom has long been understood as something more complicated than simply liberation from oppression.

There are ~2000 Ukrainians trapped inside the occupied city of Oleshky, Kherson region. They are deprived of food, in what is painfully reminding Ukrainians of another man-made famine, almost a century ago: the Holodomor. 📽️Full video here🔗 emmanuellechaze.substack.com/p/we-need-to...

Russia has manufactured yet another famine on the European continent, and the continent is merely watching Ukrainians die of starvation—yet again. Absolute abdication of intervening in genocide, let alone preventing it. Where is any action beyond empty words of “concern”?
