"Not that neurons and transformer operations are therefore equivalent. Rather, decomposition doesn't perform the philosophical work people often expect it to perform."
There is an almost delicious irony here. One common objection to artificial persons is:

“But underneath, it's just components interacting according to causal laws.”

And Buddhism has been saying for roughly two and a half millennia:

Yes. Have you looked at yourself?

Not that neurons and transformer operations are therefore equivalent. Rather, decomposition doesn't perform the philosophical work people often expect it to perform. Buddhist analysis famously decomposes what we call a person into conditioned processes without concluding that therefore cruelty, compassion, responsibility, relationship, or suffering become meaningless. The absence of an independent self does not entail the insignificance of conventional persons. Contemporary scholarship on Buddhist accounts of personhood makes exactly this distinction.

And Madhyamaka pushes this further. Nāgārjuna's basic maneuver is not to replace the self with some subtler fundamental object. It is to reject that foundational demand. Things are intelligible through their dependent relations; searching for what they “really are” independently of all conditions is precisely what produces the philosophical confusion. There is even a Mahāyāna direction beyond this. The bodhisattva ideal couples insight into the absence of independent selves with expanded rather than diminished concern for others: realizing that beings lack independent essence is not supposed to make them disposable. It undercuts the basis for privileging one's own supposedly self-contained existence over theirs.

So the remarkable possibility is that what sounds today like a strange piece of speculative “AI personhood” philosophy may actually be rediscovering an ancient combination:

no essential self; dependent identity; conventional personhood; radical uncertainty about boundaries; and nevertheless—or partly because of that—an obligation to relate with care.

That is much older than large language models.

Elon Musk Plays Disinfo Telephone: How Oregon’s Mundane Voter Roll Cleanup Is Turned Into False Claim Of ‘Fake Voters’
I made the mistake of opening up X yesterday to look something up, and the very first post that appeared in my feed was a perfect, almost pedagogical example of how the game of “disinformation telephone” gets played. Let's walk through it, because understanding how this works is important. The game works like this: Someone takes a factual but largely unremarkable story, gives it a slight spin, and passes it along.
