High Skills Don’t Shield Immigrants From Racial Bias
I ran a survey experiment with British respondents. It suggests that skills do not shield immigrants from racial bias — if anything, I find the opposite.

when I read through history I often wonder how could human beings be so cruel, unkind - and utterly devoid of basic humanity. And then I get real time reminders like this. ↘️

My death penalty position is that the state should not be in the business of deliberately killing its citizens and the fact that it’s also incapable of doing it humanely is just another level of the madness.

I used to think the most creative writers were unusually good at having good ideas. Now I think they may just be unusually good at spotting them. Because having ideas is easy. I have lots of them, but most are terrible. So the question is: how do you know when there’s something there? 🧵

IR Book of the Week! "Taming the Careerists" by Minju Kim. When it comes to US foreign policy, we focus a lot on Presidents, top-level diplomats, and the close advisers to both. But US foreign policy is also dramatically (and surprisingly, as Kim shows) influenced by career bureaucrats.

Lots of writing advice is about procrastination or writer’s block. We worry & develop routines to tackle it. But what if our problem is the opposite? What if we write too much? Too many emails, posts, essays, papers. We have become very good at making ourselves write, perhaps too good. 🧵

Among the many wonderful things about Dolly Parton, she also sent free books to millions of children (including my own) and the stories were about kindness, community, and loving your neighbor. What a legacy to leave.

To people outside of academia, 10% might not sound that much — and, tbh, I don’t understand why anyone would come here to study — but these 10% of foreign students “subsidize” a much larger group of U.S. students, who will face fewer professors and programs at higher costs.

Such great advice from @catherinedevries.bsky.social, highlighting maybe my most frequent plea to grad students: Share your work before it's perfect. It'll never be perfect. As CdV says: "ask someone you trust to read your piece and ask for advice. Do this earlier then you are normally used to."
