Note these bits of information in particular. I bet if you looked at the administrative costs of attempting to collect that money, they would exceed the amount collected, meaning that the state is spending more money than it’s generating with these fees.

Between 2012 and 2022, the state charged low-income Iowans $151.2 million for their lawyers, according to court data I obtained through state public records requests.

Very little of that money is ever collected: As Kornya noted in his legal filing on behalf of Pagliai, the state recouped an average of just 2.3 percent of indigent defense costs between 2015 and 2021
