School campuses are sexually violent places. From frat houses to English departments, rape culture thrives in colleges and universities - just as it thrives in the world more generally. Too many victims suffer agony, hardship, and even death as a result.

We need rape studies. We need more memoirs by survivors. We need more academic books on rape. We need more classes devoted to the study of rape culture and sexual violence. We need more conferences where those of us who work in these fields can share ideas and build solidarity. We need # MeToo.

By “we” I mean all of us, because rape culture harms everyone - including you.

Let me conclude this chapter by inviting you to imagine a prodigious marble wall situated in a verdant garden. Carved into this marble wall are the names of every single victim and survivor of sexual violence, deceased and alive, fictional and mythical and real. Look, for example, over here-Chanel Miller's name and Clarissa Harlowes name are inscribed near each other because their first names both begin with the letter C. Through such physical proximity on the wall, Chanel Miller and Clarissa Harlowe become newly

metonymically linked. And look over here—Philomela and Persephone, too, find their names adjacent on the wall due to alphabetical order. Through such physical proximity, the two women become newly metonymically linked and newly interrelated. Just as Emily Doe and Jane Doe and Jae-in Doe can be understood as sisters who share the same family name ("Doe"), so, too, are the victims and survivors named on this wall joined and interrelated by siblinghood, proximity, and solidarity. To behold this vast and formidable wall is to behold a new kind of family tree, a new web of relationships, where the names of Zeus, Tereus, Lovelace, Brock Turner, and other rapists are nowhere to be found because their names are no longer closely associated with ours. Through projects such as this #MeToo wall that I have just asked you to imagine, new and hopeful metonymic relationships can grow and fourish—not only between and among the names on the wall, but also between the wall and visitors who will come to honor survivors, engage in dialogue, and learn about survivors' stories.

I dream of a day in the near future when such a wall exists.

I dream, too, of a day in the far future when such a wall will no
longer be necessary.
