🇨🇱 Lovely to see Lamine Yamal’s homage to the originator of the ‘no rabona’ move, the Buenos Aires-born Chilean Matías ‘Matigol’ Fernández. Here Matigol pulls off the move playing for Colo-Colo against Estudiantes de La Plata all the way back in 2006!

Some context for colleagues outside Ireland: over 300,000 people are on strike today. That's over 11 per cent of *all* people working in the state.

As a member of the public, I support striking workers today. Public sector workers are woefully undervalued, and I thought we learned that lesson during the COVID lockdowns, but apparently we need a reminder. I want workers to be paid fairly for the valuable services they provide. Yup the unions!

This is one of those bits of Irish history that sounds suspiciously like someone has written a film. Six Fenian prisoners. Fremantle Prison. An American whaling ship. A 28-hour escape through storm & surf. Historian Michael B. Barry popped in to sign Catalpa. Copies now instore & online! 💚📚

Three photographs of Irish historian and author Michael B. Barry visiting Chapters Bookstore Dublin with his new book Catalpa: The Epic Story of the Greatest Prison Rescue in Irish History.

In the first he stands smiling outside the Chapters Parnell Street shopfront holding the book beneath the Bookshop of the Year 2025 signage. In the second he smiles inside the shop, holding Catalpa in front of the Chapters bookshelves.

In the third he is seated at a table signing copies, with stacks of the book beside him ready for Chapters readers.

Cooking in a Bedsitter has arrived in Secondhand. Is that a mouse hanging on the cover? 🐭 Inside: a lovingly handwritten recipe involving beans, chilli, “thickish brown gravy” and fruit added at the end. We cherish the note. We have some questions about dinner.

A handwritten recipe on a torn sheet of lined paper found inside the book. It begins by simmering red beans, then adds onion, chilli powder, mushrooms and meat. The beans are stirred into “thickish brown gravy”, with fruit added near the end.

Worn black paperback cover of Katharine Whitehorn’s Cooking in a Bedsitter. A candle stands beside a row of hooks holding a cup, food, a knife and a small furry object that looks rather like a mouse.

Fergal Keane: 'For Bazunu to refuse to play is a sacrifice that required immense moral courage. Ultimately, he was the lone voice who said no, and that will be remembered in the broken alleys of Gaza.'

After his time in the West Bank, he went back to Gaza and trained young footballers. Then October 7, 2023 happened. Then the war. On August 6 last year, he went to queue for food at an aid distribution site in southern Gaza and was killed by Israeli fire.

Suleiman al-Obeid left behind his wife and five children. He is not the only Palestinian footballer to be killed. Local officials put the death toll of players in the hundreds. Sports facilities and school playgrounds have been destroyed.

Gavin Bazunu and his colleagues on the Ireland team surely know about Suleiman al-Obeid. They share with him something precious: the knowledge that the moment you don your country’s shirt, in whatever code, you become a representative of the nation. It is a privilege and a responsibility.

For Bazunu to refuse to play is a sacrifice that required immense moral courage. Ultimately, he was the lone voice who said no, and that will be remembered in the broken alleys of Gaza.
