When a girl is drowned by her elder sister in competition for love of a knight, a minstrel crafts a harp from her body; yellow hair for strings. The minstrel performs at the elder sister’s wedding but when strummed the harp sings only the truth of the murder, exposing the crime🪉 #wyrdwednesday

This ghastly illustration comes from Ernest Suffling's 'Decameron Of A Hypnotist' from 1898. I've never read it, or Suffling's more famous work, 'The Story Hunter', which I'm realising is a serious oversight on my part. This looks creepy as hell. #SpookySunday

It looks like the 1828 production used a magic lantern to project an image of the ghost ship. This article has Fitzball’s own description of how the effect was created and suggests it may have been the first stage production to use a magic lantern in this way.

The Flying Dutchman, or The Phantom Ship was a play by Edward Fitzball from 1826 about a ghostly ship that foretold doom to all who saw her. It was performed regularly for the rest of the century and was popular enough to inspire a parody version by Christy’s Minstrels in the 1860s. #SpookySunday
