Note the right lateral offset of the yellow centerline of you look across the fault. (Traffic spotters had my back for this quick snap).
A road through the central coast of California, as viewed from the central line of the highway, looking off into the distance before the road turns. There’s mountains in the background and a few oak trees on the side of the road, but the important feature is at the bottom of the photo where there’s a rumble piece of asphalt that goes across the entire highway. That is the San Andreas fault and if you look across the rumble area, you can easily see the yellow center line has been offset to the right by a couple inches. this offset has happened within the last 10 years or so as they frequently repave this section.

I'm (somehow) already eligible to go up for promotion to full professor this year, but after how nitpicky and judgmental my tenure process was, I'm waiting until it's completely unambiguous to even the biggest sticklers that I check the boxes. Not strong enough to go through that again otherwise.

My first job was at a music store, and I once had someone come to the counter and say that her kid’s teacher told her to get this sheet music, and she didn’t know how to say the composer’s name, but it was spelled B-A-Y-T-O-V-I-N.

Global model ensembles are in strong agreement that a prolonged &anomalous nearly West-wide autumn heatwave will develop this week & persist for 10+ days. While some daytime records may be set, this event will be more notable for its persistence & breadth. [Thread]
Map showing predicted temperature anomalies in early October from the ECMWF ensemble across the western U.S. Nearly the entire region is painted red and pink, indicating widespread very warm anomalies.

I still see them pretty regularly in the SFV. I don't think the number is increasing anymore, but it's sure not decreasing either.

Fault Taunting xkcd.com/3296/
4-panel comic. (1) [Giant fishing rod-like cat toy positioned above four tectonic plates. Two helicopters that appear tiny due to scale fly above. People next to device are so tiny they cannot be seen.] PERSON 1: The key to exposing new geologic layers is understanding the three forces driving plate movement: slab pull, ridge push, and taunting. (2) PERSON 2: Taunting? What do– PERSON 1: *Initiate thrust fault pattern!* [The dangly end of the toy wiggles.] (3) “Rumble” sound effect from tectonic plates. (4) “Lunge!” sound effect from tectonic plates. [Plates split at a diagonal angling toward toy.]

This paper suggest how the towers collapsed (one got straight down, the other fell sideways) dispersed the energy different - as most potential energy went into the deformation & disintegration & only a small percentage into the seismic event cvt.engin.umich.edu/wp-content/u...

I know this is aside from the point, but I'm wondering why the two collapses had different magnitudes, since they were identical structures on the same site.
