Retaliation goes far beyond firing. Of 196 recorded incidents of employer retaliation against employees speaking out on Palestine, nearly 40% (76) resulted in termination. Retaliation that does not rise to the level of termination is an even larger phenomenon.
All categories of academic workers are at risk. Of the 162 individuals whose employment status was disclosed, 30% involved non-tenure track faculty or instructors, and 36% were tenured.
People of color are disproportionately affected. Of the 134 cases recorded in the AFI database in which respondents’ identification is known, two-thirds were people of color: 30% SWANA; 10.5% Black; and 27% other POC. Additionally, 16.5% identify as Jewish. More than half of those targeted whose gender is known are women. Such retaliation compounds the abuse of already racist and sexist work environments.

This is just my opinion, but for many that participated they thought that trying to organize and develop a group would at best, put a target at that group as the movement's representative. At worse, the people thought any group was an authoritarian one, and that the people would spontaneously rebel.

March 2026: Baltimore ICE arrests migrant mothers with active asylum cases, detaining them in the Baltimore ICE holding cell.
They endured crowding of 60 women into a small room without space to sleep, and lack of access to hygene supplies leading to women piling used diapers on the floor. On March 8, they were secretly transferred to Northwest Detention in Washington State, a day before investigators arrived to see the unsanitary conditions.
ICE shipped
women across the country to cover up
inhumane conditions at the Baltimore holding cell.
The women saw the need to unite and fight back, and organized themselves as Las Madres Unidas en la Lucha, and worked with organizations to share their stories and fight for freedom and reunification with their families. After protests and press conferences outside the detention center and Baltimore ICE, the women were released, following months spent in illegal detention.
But after release, they continue to be criminalized. ICE put them in ankle monitors. This makes it hard to find work, and further traumatizes them and their families.
Las Madres Unidas en la Lucha assert they are not criminals. The real criminals are the ICE agents who illegally detained them in inhuman conditions, and the US government directing mass deportations. They continue to fight for justice, not just for themselves, but to end the attacks on all migrants. They demand:
1) Remove the ankle monitors! End criminalization of migrant mothers!
2) Shut down the Baltimore ICE holding cell! Stop the cover ups!
3) Compensate their families for lost wages and expenses incurred as a result of the unjust detention!

I reanalyzed the CDC data behind the LGB “free fall” headline. It rests on a change in bisexual identification among one grade, in one wave, of one survey. Gay or lesbian identification did not change significantly. Calling it a "free fall" is sensational and just gives bad actors talking points.
